I need to paint the fiberglas interior of my Hunter 30 and am examining alternatives. The marine paint manufacturers carry excellent products but they tend to be on the expensive side. Has anyone used Rustoleum (or a similar product for this application? How well does it work, and what pitfalls am I likely to encounter? What are my alternatives? Thanks, all Jim

Preparation of the surface is key
I think preperation of the surface is more important than the particular paint. Fiberglass surfaces can have epoxy oils in them and molding residues which are best removed using soap and water. Apparently sanding alone will not remove these oils and residues. Also, a fiberglass dewaxer may be useful. Following good preparation, I think that just about any good enamle or epoxy paint will perform just fine on the interior. Rustoleum is a good brand of enamle, has several colors, is readily available, and is realtively inexpensive. So with good preparation, I think you will do just fine with this on the interior.

Jim, when you said Rustoleum I thought of
your engine. An old high performance engine standard is to paint the inside of the block casting with Rustoleum to seal in the impurities. But that was before sonic cleaning. My 86 Yanmar is painted that way from the factory.

New Fusion paint
I have used the new fusion paint by Krylon on the exterior of my boat, with GREAT success! It bonds on the molecular level to plastic and it does a good job. I havent tried it in salt water yet, so I cant say about how it will stand up out there! I am going to take her out in salt water and see! As good as it has bonded so far though I dont see any problem. You can get it at Wal Mart for like 3 or 4 dollars a spray can! Its up to you! Buy 1 can and try it! Zinzer Bathroom Paint
I used Zinzer Bathroom Paint in the head and galley. They claim it'll adhere to almost anything without primer and, so far, I've found this to be true. I just used it on a formica vanity at home and got very good results. They say it's mildew proof, won't flake or blister. Again, so far this is true. I've always liked Zinzer products for home use. The Bathroom paint comes in flat or semi=gloss and it's bight white but can be tinted. Zinzer is available at Home Depot and other paint stores.
