We're repainting the center board. We're finding rust--is it necessary to use a primer? We using her in fresh water only. Also--We are painting her while she is on the trailer--how do you paint the portion of the center board that is in the boat?
I had the same problem with my centerboard. I took mine completly out by putting the trailor on dirt and taking out the center crossmember on the trailor. I dug a hole in the dirt and brought the board back and down. Your boat is larger than mine but it may work for you. As for primer, get yourself some ospho it may be hard to find but your rust problems will be over . Good luck!
Once you get acess to the board. sand or power wire brush all loose rust from board. then go to auto paint dealer. (in your yellow pages) get phosphoric acid stabalizer. coat board as per inst. on bottle. this solution chemicaly changes the iron oxide to iron sulphide. then prime and barrier coat over this. that will stop rusting problems. this product comes under various trade names. ideally the best solution would be to take the board completely out and have it sand blasted.
