After 4 months of prep work, man it seems like 14 months, I started my primer today. I am using Interlux Primekote. I have some over lap, but this is the first of three primer coats. I will be sanding between all coats.

Anything to be concerned about?

Move on and keep painting you Nancy boy?

Looks good Dave. The overlap may be caused by not leaving a wet edge to continue from or working on too large a section at a time. But if it sands out ok then it should not be a problem. What are you using as your final finish?

Perfection. I am hopeful that I can get the hang of this rolling by the time I get to the Perfection. I tried some brush tipping with the primer today. I was not very good at it.

I am going to cut down the section size tomorrow, the edge was getting tacky by the time I got the next section rolling.

Try working just one roller full of paint and then tipping with your brush. You should get about 8 to 10 square feet from a full roller, 3/8 inch nap.

Try to float your roller off the hull at the end of your stroke. This will help reduce the over lap. I would try to find someone to help when you get ready to paint. It is too hard to roll and tip by yourself. The paint drys too fast for that

is critical and varies a bit with temperature (too little it does not level well, too much, it runs). VERY little should be needed, however. It would not be a mistake on you first top coat day to have small bit of something you have primed to test on. It is really hard to get all of the elements these folks have described right on the first go. I have used Perfection several times, it does well, but I will admit to having painted one section twice my first try.

Pick a perfect day. Cold and humidity do not help at all.

And relax. If the first pass does not satisfy, let it cure, sand a bit, and learn from what you did. Don't think you can go back and do anything behind the edge you re working. Let it cure - often times the imperfection is drying changes or lighting and shadows. Good even light is super important when hand painting.

Thanks Tim, I just got done sanding for an hour and half before work and have more to do. I am doing it all by hand sanding. Did you hand sand or use a small orbital?

I would sand by hand. I used a sponge sanding pad so I didn't put to much pressure to wear away a lot of primer. Like Ron said get a couple good brushes for the tip out. Here is a pic of my dinghy that I painted with tops sides using the roll and tip method. I was very pleased with the paint job. If you hold a rule up to the boat you can read to the 28 inch mark. My younger brother is a auto body painter and he says thats how they decide how good a paint job looks. He was impressed that it was rolled on and looked so good.

Very nice dingy William, very nice. I was crazy to think I would paint everyday. It looks like I will paint one day and spend many hours sanding the next day and evening. I may be rather buff by the time this is all over. I came in this morning and got a shower after sanding and my wife had my 4 year old son on the bathroom sink brushing his teeth. He kept reaching over and squeezing my bicep, I guess he did not know there was supposed to be an actual muscle there. :)

1st note to self: Start to understand that if you get better at applying the primer, you will not need so much time to wet sand.

2nd note to self: Quality sand paper is not exactly free, please refer to 1st note.

3rd note to self: You have been nursing a torn rotator cuff for 15 years, please pay close attention to notes 1 & 2.

Side note to self: Screaming Sweet Mana from Heaven would not have been necessary upon finding your last sheet of 150 grit sandpaper if you would have sanded the top of the rudder weeks ago, just as all the other voices in your head kept insisting.

Remember the karate kid, right hand wax on, left hand wax off! ;)
Get a sanding stick (extension pole) and a bucket of water. Mount your sand paper on a soft holder on an extension pole. You can cover a lot of territory that way and save your joints. Can you imagine digging with a shovel with no handle? That is painting and sanding without a handle.

I sould be 10 foot and bullet proof after all those wax ons and wax offs. I need to put together a fancy stick, good advice Ross.

Keyskipper, the Interlux Perfection is said to need special sprayers from all the forums I have looked into and according to their own website. I need to use a two part epoxy primer as a base. I figure the primer will give me enough practice so when I hit the expensive, you better get it right the first time paint, I have a little better skill at this rolling and tipping application. I would love to spray it, I just do not want to get into it and find I am just clogging the spray nozzle on a typical air spray gun.

Take it easy, man. Been there. That can set you back for years. You can't buy a new arm.

Well

IF your using white perfection CHECK the LOT# as there is a recall on 3 shades of white

TRUST ME i did my final coat with one of the bad cans and had to start from step one

I am spraying my mast in Perfection because i already own good a SATA spray gun and the air filter system needed to supply clean dry air as well as a room with a fume hood

I have sprayed a LOT of PPG two part paint and Perfection is fussy stuff BUT when it cures it is some tough stuff and looks great
