Hello all,

I bought a boat a few weeks ago and would like to rename her. The previous name is painted on the (white) transom and I'd like to paint over that and then add the new name with vinyl lettering.

What is the best procedure for doing this? What is the best type of paint to use?

Thanks for any input,

Remo

Don't add paint, remove it. It should not be too dificult to remove that paint using a good soy based stripper like Franmar. Buff out the transom, apply new name(don't forget Vigor's renaming ceremony) and wax.

Is your boat already painted? or is it still gelcoat. If the boat has not been previously painted I would sugest carefully scraping off the old name with a razor blade. BTW you do know its suposedly bad luck to change a vessels name. Although I supose the British navy changed the names of ships all the time when they captured them back in Lord Nelson's day.

Paint removal

A while back I removed an old painted name from a white gelcoat boat. I used spray on oven cleaner. Worked quick and easy, just washed it off. I suggest a test area first.

I've seen several posts concerning renaming of boats, and some have deteriorated into somewhat heated discussions about superstitions. Here's the facts....having a renaming ceremony is great fun. Invite your friends, serve boiled shrimp, and have a blast. Sorry, I don't know much about removing old paint.

Paint remover and plastic razor blades, plastic scrapers

Then after all paint is removed wet sand the area with 600 then 1200 and polish and you should have a like new finish ready for new lettering
here's a link for plastic razor blades

If it's paint...
then EZ-Off oven cleaner will remove it rapidly and completely. Have a hose handy, of course, and wear gloves.

Don't be silly. Here's an explanation why it WAS unlucky to change a boat name. https://www.boatnames.net/wiki.aspx/Boat_Naming_Mythology

Remove old painted boat names with Eay-Off, let it soak for 5-10 minutes, spray again to re-moisten then shave it off with a razor/scraper. The runs will stain the area underneath the name so keep wet or tape off. An old scotch pad helps on oxydized surfaces. White gel coat hulls will yellow until you rinse off the oven cleaner then it will return to white. If your hull is a colored gel coat, be very gentle or have someone else remove name as you will loose the shine.

I don't think you are going to find a better paint remover from gel coat that Easy Off oven cleaner. Just spray it on, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, scrub a little with a semi stiff brush and rinse. You may need a second coat if the paint is thick in some areas. I have done this several times and it works great. It is what the sign painters recommended to me.

PS: If your boat is painted this is not the best thing to use, but nothing else would be very good either on paint.

SERVE BOILED SHRIMP? That is sacrilege!!!!! Shrimp should be steamed or sauted` Boiling them puts all the flavor in the water. Steam the shrimp with some Old Bay seasoning and serve with good beer and rustic bread. Then you can have a blast.
