Soon we will be painting our O'Day 22's hull: bootstripe, sides and bottom. We are also planning on painting the smooth portions of the deck. Since this paint is so expensive we would like to get only enough for the job. Has anyone completed this project? I am wondering how many quarts of paint to buy for each portion. Any opinions on brands? Don't say Awlgrip because we have determined that coating the hull in solid gold would be cheaper! We are thinking about Interlux Brightside. What about the bottom? So many choices for that! Thanks in advance.

I painted an 18 ft. motor launch this past spring. (it has a little less surface area than the 22) I used 1 quart per coat. (2 quarts of primer 2 coats, 3 coats of Interlux Perfection 2 part epoxy 3 coats) there was a little left over from each quart. (with the Perfection, whatever was left ended up hardening up in the can...which I had to throw away) When I owned my 22 I did the deck (both smooth surface and non-skid.) I used 1 quart of Petit's Easypoxy for the smooth surface and less than a quart of Petit's Easypoxy (with silicon sand mixed in) for the non-skid. As was stated ....prep work is the MOST important. i put about 40 hours sanding and fairing the launch (not to mention all the drying time for the epoxy I used to fair).

oops, the whole point was that I called Interlux and they told me how much paint I should buy for the size of the boat being painted.

I appreciate your input. I am now planning on using Interlux Perfection. At first I was wary of using a two part poly, but feel slightly more confident after educating myself on the process. Do you know if there is a problem with using a one part over a two part? The reason I ask is that I would like to use the less expensive Brightside with nonskid additive to redo those nonskid portions of the deck. Thanks again!

Best Paint
The best paint to use is Perfection. I did my 22 last year and it still looks brand new. It's a 2 part paint and requires a bit more prep but it is more than worth it. My 1980 boat looks like it just rolled out of the showroom. I never painted a boat before - a novice at boat paint. I jsut read the directions and followed the steps on the CD and everything went fine. I have had the boat in the Gulf of Mexico for a year and it still looks good. Total job took about 40 hours.

After hearing that I am positive that we will be using Interlux Perfection polyurethane for both the deck and hull paint. It is great to hear that a novice was able to obtain good results. What is the CD that you speak of? Any lessons learned from that process? Did you prime with Primekote? How many coats of primer and Perfection? Thanks for the help, these forums are such a wonderful resource. When you have a thirty-three year old boat and the factory is defunct it is a lifesaver to have a community like this.
