My boot stripe has taken a beating over the years from my mooring ball. I would like to paint it this year. Does anybody know what paint is used by Hunter to paint the boot stripe? I have tried calling the Hunter service department a couple of time but nobody is picking up. I am thinking of using Brightside by Interlux. If you have used this paint before and matched the color I would be curious to hear what color you used. Thanks Andy

I have used Interlux Brightside

to paint waterlines on a number of boats. I found it relatively easy to use and relatively long lasting. I don't know what Hunter uses, but I found that Flag Blue came pretty close to what was on the boat.

Gel Coat

The boot stripe on the mid-80's Hunters is in the Gel Coat. You can try to 'polish' it some with 400-600 wet or dry paper, then use buffing compound to bring it back to life. If it's so badly damaged that you need to paint it, you probably need to rough up the surface with 80-100 grit and use multiple coats of a polyurethane type paint; use painter's tape for masking the edges to a clean line and use a 3" wide roller.

My Boat

My boat is a 2004 Hunter 33. The current in the harbor often is stronger than prevailing winds and causes the boats to ride up onto the mooring ball. The boot stripe takes the brunt of this abuse. I have gone the polish route with unsatisfactory results. You are correct in how I plan to approach the paint job. I would like to just match the paint and color if possible. I'll try Hunter service again to see what they say. Andy
