I'm about to paint the mast on my Hunter 23. I know the mast is made of aluminum and was wondering what type of paint works well in a marine environment and adheres to aluminum. I was thinking about using rustoleum spray paint. Just thought I'd check before the work started.

Mast paint

The critical part for any paint job is perparation of the substrate (the surface of the mast) for adherence. If the mast is anodized, it will have a "toothy" surface for the paint to adhere. If not, an etching chemical is needed to get a bond. Be a fanatic about following the manufacturers' instructions and avoid any surface contamination (including finger prints) I would use a top quality epoxy paint. Airplanes and aluminum boats are painted all the time and someone in a maintenance company would have a painter, who could give great advice for local conditions such as salt air etc. Maybe you wanted to do a more simple job, but in spite of the advertising, even Rustoleum will perform better if you pay strict attention to preparation.

Por-15

The coating por-15 is the most durable stuff i've ever used on bare metal (from aluminum to rusty steel / iron) they have an etching compound called metal ready you put on the bare aluminum, then use the por-15 (available in a few colors) and then paint with whatever you choose. Like the previous post, painting aluminum without etching is a definate no no if using por-15 use a respirator, the stuff is rude John
