I'm just about to do the keel rust removal shuffle and was wondering how does everyone deal with the bottom of the keel? have it lifted and the blocks moved or throw a coat of paint on it before splashing, one guy told me that going over an occasional sand bar keeps it clean :eek:. Any ideas?

I have dealt with the rust areas on my Iron keel by wire brushing it well, and then putting on 2 coats of Pettit Rust-Lok paint. That binds and seals any remaining rust. Then I applied 2 coats of Anti-fouling Bottom Paint (I used Pettit Trinadad SR). I would have been better to have sand blasted the whole keel and then do the process that I did. Peerhaps a Barrier Coat between the Rust-Lok and the Anti-fouling Bottom Paint would have been an even better process.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear, I've got the sides figured out I was asking about the bottom edge. The part that is currently sitting on the supports or boards

I have been trying to figure out a solution for this also. The boat sits on 2x4 "blocks" about 9 inches high when it is in the cradle so I can reach the spots in between but there are 6 blocks so that leaves 6X 4" wide stripes across the bottom of the keel. I thought of inching the boat up with a couple of short jacks- going up about 1/4 inch then raising the pads and putting thin boards on top of few of the blocks. If I could get the boat up about 1.5 in i could get a scraper under and a small roller. Not sure if I will get up the nerve.

Do the area between the blocks .. let it dry.. get 'em to come over with the lift and shift the blocks, using wax paper to keep em from sticking. now do the places ya haven't gotten to yet.

Having a cradle would be nice. I'm sitting on the side of a hill with the bow pointing uphill. Boat is stable but I don't think I'll be adjusting the jack stands myself. The local broker that I bought her from said that most of the time people just leave it alone as running it across a sandy bottom will clear off any coating you put on it.

I clean and scrape the bottom of my keel when the boat is hauled and in the slings prior to blocking. I paint the bottom of the keel when the boat is about to be launched. I am also do the jackstand patches at that time too. Keel bottom is a bit rough,but not too bad.

Having a lift would be nice :). We rent a crane to launch- so cost is the prohibitor. We also do not allow any painting while in the slings- every effort made to move things along quickly.

I can see why you are not keen to move things, Cjfj

Hmmmm.. since you lift every year, do everything you can this year then make sure blocks are in a different place next year..??
