Painting Carpeted Liner???

We have an '88 H285. It has the light grey walls in the cabin, made out of cheap-looking carpet. There is some mold on it. A friend suggested painting it with "Kilz" to kill/prevent the mold, then covering the kilz with regular latex paint of a color of our choosing. Anyone heard of this or done it? I really don't want to remove the csrpet from the walls and replace it. And yes, it is the carpet WALLS I'm talking about.

Ah yes, mouse fur

Hunter used it extensively in the 80's. We've got it and clean it with automotive upholstery cleaner. Carpet cleaner works too. As always test a small area first.While not 'salty' looking I find it softens the looks of the interior surfaces and when cleaned up is very unobtrusive. It also seems to supply some insulative properties as it prevents condensation on those surfaces.I'm sure Hunter used it as a cheap surfacing solution but every now and then cheap isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Mouse fur/monkey fur was IN in the '80s

Almost every boat builder use it for headlinerss, and they were also fond of walking carpet at least halfway up the hull. If you want to see what the end result of priming it with Kilz and then painting it will look like, go a carpet dealer and scrounge a scrap piece that's as close as possible to the texture and weave of what's on the boat and try it on that. I certainly wouldn't do it on the boat till I knew what it would end up looking like!

If you see mold, wait til you see whats behind it

when we bought our 34 four yrs ago i had alot of the same. We have an 87 and with the same carpeting. We ripped it off and it was pretty black on the walls. I used almost straight beach to clean it up. be careful though, the bleach is very powerful stuff but works miracles. We then went to the fabric store and replaced. you can pick out colors, types etc.first though make sure you found and repaired your leaks from the cause in the first place. ours looks new and is clean front and back. good luck. craig

We are going to have to replace our fabric also in our 26. Can you tell me what kind of fabric that you bought at the fabric store? Was it the same fuzzy stuff or something different? Thanks

I have to check on fabric

We bought our fabric at hancock fabrics in mpls. it was in the upolstery dept and on a five foot roll. It was light grey and was alittle lighter material than what was on their. that made it easier to work with. we cut with razor blades and used contact cement for glue. outcome was great. first though, try and find your leaks, tear off the old, use bleach mixture to get rid of black stains then apply the new. ours looks like new after three yrs. be careful with the potent bleach though. craig i will find out if i can get a brand name of the fabric or email me at shavdog@aol.com and i will stop in and get the mgfr name.
