Painting a rudder

I would appreciate some advice. I just purchased a 1988 O'day 322. The seller told me that he understood that only white bottom paint should be used on the rudder. I have not found any literature to support that and I don't understand the reason for such a limitation. Has anyone had any problems using red or blue bottom paint on their rudder, or does anyone have any definitive info on why only white will do? Thanks for your help.

Rudder Paint

Never heard of it. Alway painted the rudder on my boats the same color as the bottom and I'm still here to talk about it. Could be a superstition. Try this: Walk around the boat three times counterclockwise, part your hair on the other side, and stand on your head while spitting a nickel into a dixie cup full of grape Kool-aid. Just kidding. While I was typing this I called a friend of mine, who is a boat builder, and he'd never heard of it either. Good luck. Cheers, Bob

corrosion?

The only reason I can think of for only painting rudder white would be to allow you to look for rust. Some boats have ferrous components to the rudder skeleton. If the rudder was painted white you might get some warning of an impending failure. Other than that I can't see how it matters. Bottom paint is similar chemically regardless of color. Barrier coat

Larry, If you have the boat out and if the rudder is not already barrier coated, barriercoat it, then bottom paint it. If you know that there are corrosive vulnerable products in your rudder, make sure your bonding/grounding system is in good working order and the your zincs are kept fresh. r.w.landau

Just A Wild Guess

If the rudder is left exposed while dry docked, and is painted a dark bottom colour its going to heat up when the sun shines on it which sets up an expansion/contraction scenario, which may damage (open) joints, from foam expanding? Plausible? I don't know, just a guess. Don

Larry, Don's "wild guess" pretty much summarizes what is printed in an owner bulletin from Foss Foam, Inc., manufacturer of rudders for ODay sailboats. This bulletin is in the owner's manual for my ODay 272. I quote,"We do not recommend the use of dark colors on your rudder, as they generate heat when the boat is out of the water in the sun. Since the rudder is made out of cellular material, this heat can cause dimensional changes and cosmetic damage. If the rudder is painted with a dark color, it should be shielded from the sun with a WHITE wrapping when the boat is out of the water. The rudder warranty excludes damage caused by heat." That having been said, I've always painted the rudder the same (dark) color that I paint the bottom of the boat. The boat is 14 years old and no damage so far... go figure. Tom

Painting your rudder

Having recently replaced a rudder on my 35 O'Day I did some research on painting it. I found that the logic is that any color other than white will cause the rudder to heat up in the sun and water (depends on where you sail). this causes it to expand and degrade the integrity of the rudder. It made sense to me and so I painted it White. This information was from several rudder manufacturers. Hope it helps
