Painting a Rudder

I just got done doing some fiberglass repairs to my rudder.

Now getting ready to paint.

I have a few questions.

1. Can I use Brightside paint for the whole rudder and then put a bottom paint over the part that is in the water?

2. Or is it better just to use Brightside out of the water and just a bottom paint in the water.

3. I did do some work that is in the water and did not know how to give it that extra protection.

Why Brightside?

Why do you want to use an expensive Interlux paint meant for topsides and decks? And why anti-fouling on only part of the rudder? Any seas of more than a foot and the entire rudder stays wet.

If the rudder is bare then paint it with an epoxy barrier-coat. Then sand lightly with 120 or higher and cover the whole thing with anti-fouling.

Your #1 and #2 seem a distinction without a difference. As long as the glass has some protection against UV degradation, either works although bottom paint is not intended as a finish.

Not sure #3 is a question

Rudder Painting

On my previous boat, I redid the bottom part of the rudder, when I redid the bottom of the boat, with Interlux 2000 sealer & Micron. I just maintained it along with the bottom. But my O'Day 23 has VC17 on the bottom, and rudder, with only slight signs of ware & tear ........ it is holding up good. But, I'm on an inland lake, in Ohio. It it were in salt, it might be a different story. I'd just seal it and paint it with anti fouling paint, and paint the top with your topside paint, so it matches. Hope this helps. Bob Burns=Rascal.
