Painting a Keel

Hi all ,I have a question for anybody who will read this. I have a 25.5 Hunter,it has a cast iron keel , it's pretty rusted up.I'm going to chip and wire brush it , maybe do a light grinding. I have bond-o ,I wasd thinking about covering the whole keel and then painting with anti foil. The question is , will I be able to do that or what should I do.

Bondo is the worst thing you can use as it absorbs moisture. After removing the rust, epoxy coat it with Interprotect or similar and then you can put bottom paint on. If you do it any other way, it will become an annual project

As Don pointed out - you should apply a barrier coat like a Interprotect 2000E/I over the bare metal before you apply the ablative paint.
I used POR-15 (available on the web) after I completely removed the entire surface from my keel using a needle scaler and a grinding wheel.
You can scuff up the surface(200 grit) after the barrier coat has dried so the bottom paint can adhere better. Some say not necessary if compatible products - I scuffed!
For filliing or fairing, the West system epoxy is the way to go. DuPont also makes a product that you simply add hardener(comes in the kit) and they have two grades - filler or fairing and they are two different shades of blue. I had a very difficult time with the filler as it gunked up my sanding pads very quickly.

Don s/v Illusion & GuyT you guys are the best thank you very much.As for the bond-o can I use it on the top side of rudder or just forget about the bond-o ? I have 2 gal ,and it kills me not to be able to use them lol

I know you'd prefer to use what's on hand but you really should not use Bondo on anything on a boat and especially not on anything below the waterline. If you want to use it on the portion of your rudder above the waterline, it might survive as long as it doesn't stay wet but don't trust it on any structural portion or on anything subject to stress. It also won't prevent moisture penetration to adjacent areas.

Mike I do most of my sailing in fresh water (not salt)and have had great success with vc tar as a base/sealer and VC17 anti fouling finish coat.I would ask others in your area and see what works there as not all products work in all areas.Good luck...Ian
