2004 Cat 310 second bottom paint job completed. Before the job there was moderate marine growth. Hailing Port is St. Petersburg, FL. Tampa Bay/Gulf is currently (10/08/09) at 86 degrees. Employed 1.5 gal Pettit Trinida ($337.50), 1 gt Pettit spraying thinner ($18), 1 gal T-36 solvent ($14.40), and Labor of $1,054.

The yard had also painted the three blade prop. Do others paint the metal? It maybe the hard paint Trinidad because of the warm water.

My yard doesn’t use bottom paint they spray the prop and shaft with a zinc based paint.

I'm based in Lemon Bay, just south of St. Petersburg, and I paint all of my running gear. I worked in a local marina for a while, and typically a bottom job would involve etching the metal running gear with a primer, and then painting it with the same paint as the rest of the bottom. The water temp here in Lemon Bay has been around 90 lately, and most of us have been scraping our bottoms every 2 weeks.

I have found no matter what I do, the paint won't stick on the running gear too long. I gave up and used Trinidad this spring with no special prep on the prop/shaft, and it lasted a few months. One blade of the prop crapped out after 3 months, and the other two lasted 6 before the paint was going. No idea why??? Anyone get more than 6 months on the running gear, and how?

I've got almost 2 years on my running gear paint job. While it is definitely showing signs of wear, most of the paint is still on the running gear. I think using the metal primer on the prop and shaft before applying the bottom paint is the most important step.
