I am getting around to changing the name of my boat from the it's original name. The old name is painted on the transom of my O'Day 25 and is wearing off and hard to read. Should I sand it off? Use some sort of paint remover? There are also some superstions about changing the name of the boat. What are they? Thanks, sPk

Changing name ceremony
SPK...check out the link. Has everything you need to change the name of your boat. We just did it actually Our O23 came with the name "Minet", and when we painted this spring we changed her name to "Sunshine Daydream".

Rubbing Compound
My O'Day 25 also came with a dorky name. I used No. 7 brand Rubbing Compound from the local auto parts store. Be sure to get rubbing, not polishing compound. It's orange and nasty, but is gets it off and will leave your transom nice and shiny. Just so you know, you will always be able to see the old name under certain lighting or angles. Especially if it was on there for the last 20-30 years. I followed the renaming ceremony to the finest detail. We had incense, shells, salt, and we even broke a bottle of fake champagne over the bow. All went well until October when she dragged her 200lb. mooring anchor a 1/4 mile across the harbor and did $4,000 worth of damage to herself. Coincedence? Maybe.

name removal
I tried oven cleaner and other chemicals. didn't touch the paint. I bought a polishing wheel for my dremel tool and carefully and meticuously removed it using the lowest setting on the tool. took me an hour and a half. It didn't remove the underlying paint on my stern. gene

Use a Wheel
I forgot to say, I used the compound with a polishing wheel. I also polished the entire hull this way. The boat was badly oxdized, but looked like new when I was done.
