Painted Gelcoat?

Does anyone have experience preparing for paint with the conditions shown in these 2 pictures?

The first is from a cutout from the seat (added 4" inspection ports) second is an area on raised part of cabin topside!

It's not loose but you can "flick" it off with a knife point if placed in the open side.

I'm guessing it was painted at some point as its a '67 model, that's about all I know.

Just want to prepare it properly and use the right product since its out of the water for some TLC.

Anyone have ideas?

I would almost think about sanding that all off, then rolling gelcoat with a fine foam roller. It's not SUPER smooth, but the texture is almost invisible, and what IS there has a little "tooth", so it's not slippery. You'd be sanding, then acetone wash, then gelcoat. I did my whole deck 3 years ago, and it looks great.

If you really want to paint it, then sand it smooth and use a one or two part poly on it. The one part is not as nasty as the two part - roll it one direction, tip it in the other. I did a hull last summer that way and itd looked great.

Ritdog - when you apply gelcoat, don't you need to use a 'release agent'? I know, there is nothing to 'releae' it from, but I thought the instructions require this agent/liquid be applied to keep it from staying 'tacky' and never hardening...

I tried it on my rudder several yrs ago, and wound up sanding it all off due to inconsistencies in the finish.

Use gelcoat with wax added. The wax rises to the top when applied and allows the gelcoat to cure properly.

Its a toss up on this job. Either choice, gelcoat or paint, the area needs sanded beyond the imperfections. If you decide on paint, I would use a couple coats of primer first.

Personally, I prefer gelcoat. It more dorable than paint.

I attached a pic of a repair job I did on my 22. I thinned the gelcoat with acetone and shot it through a spray gun. It could be rolled like mentioned above. If rolled you may want to wet sand the orange peel and buff it out.

So basically sand off the old and put on new! I didn't know you could re Gelcoat it I thought I had to paint, sooooo many decisions!

I suppose there's different brands like with paint!

Can I use like an 80 grit?

Do the same in bilge area of boat too?

Plenty of people will sand off gelcoat and paint with a 2 part polyurethane using a roll and tip method. Once you sand that down, I imagine you'd need to do some fairing, then then probably some high build primer. Depends on how good you want the final result to be.

A guy at my club rolled on gel coat on his small boat. It didn't come out as smoothly as he would have liked, but then again, he admits he'd rather be sailing it than going to the trouble of properly sanding, polishing, and waxing.

Kiwi-grip is getting a lot of good marks for non-skid renewal.

Thanks for the replies, I'd much rather be sailing as well but I guess since its out of the water I might as well spend a little extra time now as I'm sure it will be many years before its out again.

The 2 part poly seems to produce a nice hull surface just not sure if I need that on the interior.

Interior paint

From discussions on the trailersailers forum, you definitely don't need to go fancy for the interior. One boat builder recommends semi-gloss acrylic latex enamel. It's all inside, protected from UV, and doesn't see the same abuse that the exterior does.

Here's the thread I'm remembering: http://bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/trailersailor/index.cgi?read=887986,painting,interior

Thanks Spooled Again - my experience with gelcoat was only on the tiller I mentioned. And not sure if it had wax in it or not...
