Has anyone ever painted their aluminum anchor? what did you use and how did it work out for you?

Thanks.

I should mention its a hinged CQR.. so its probably Galvanized Steel, not aluminum. so i imagine any prep i would do would strip the galvanization off making it prone to rusting.. maybe i should just get it chrome dipped.

I've not painted an aluminum anchor but did spray a zinc coating (available from West Marine) onto a galvanized anchor (CQR 25lbs) that was showing some rust on the edges. I think it worked OK but required another coat during the season. I even looked into having it hot dipped regalvanized. The places I called wanted a minimum ($250 or so). If anyone knows of a shop willing to hot dip a 25# anchor for a more reasonable price, please let me know (bob.sousa@rocketmail.com).

If it is old the galvanized finish will accept paint readily use any exterior metal primer and any machinery enamal.

Check on POR 15, or Pettit Trailer Coat they both work well on old galvanizing and tight rust.

Paint

I did the same as Rich on my prior anchor, and it looked good and held up well (it's in my storage now; I replaced it with a Fortress).

However, a guy near me is a painting contractor. He took his Danforth and had his shop sand blast it. Then they primed it twice and put three coats of two-part enamel, silver gray, on it many years ago. It looks perfect still.

I suspect you mean for visibility under water?

If so, it seems like a good idea.

Ditto Rich and Rick ...
10 years ago, wen I was equipping L'Attitude, I special ordered a "Spade" anchor ( the precursor to Ronchna/Manson Supreme) from WM.
When it finally came in, the "brand new" anchor (cast in Tunisia, I was told)
had lots of rust. I told the people at WM that I didn't want it. They said, "it's special order, you have to take it". I laughed. They called their "people".
After discussion, they offer me the $800 anchor for what it cost to ship it from Tunisia ... ~ $200. I took it.
Wire brushed and cleaned it up, applied several coats of "cold galvanize" spray paint ... and over that, I painted the "spade" portion yellow (per Russ) .... it had come w/ that portion of the anchor pained yellow... not sure why, but I kinda liked it. so...
Anyway, as previous posts have said, my experience has been, paint on an anchor will last 3-4 seasons depending on use and application.

I had my 45# CQR and 300' of chain regalvanized for about 100$. The anchor alone would have been about 50$. It still looks good though it hasn't quite been a season yet.

Figured I'd share the Anchor painting fun.. Last coat of battleship grey.. Two coats of white gloss detail goes on over the next two days.. Then polish and then wax then done.... She should be the prettiest anchor on the dock :)

There was a painted anchor on one of the Beneteaus we chartered in the BVI's. It had alternating 3" black and white stripes painted perpedicular to the chain. I thought it looked ridiculous until the first time we anchored and could tell how well the anchor was dug in from the bow. It was much easier to see on the bottom than a galvanized anchor, though I still dove the anchor every time to confirm it was dug in.

Too bad in the northeast the visibility in the water is only 4 feet at best most of the time.. We would need a camera hooked up to the anchor to see how well it's hooked. Maybe I should market a product like that?? Hmmm.

Hey, Billy, while you're inventing, I see in the Norhtern tool catalog an "Off-Road Commode" (#33057-1817). It is a potty seat that fits into a towing hitch receiver for, well, "off-road use". Perhaps a similar idea for "on the water" use would make MILLIONS of dollars. Maybe latch on the outboard side of a stanchion? Perhaps Peggy knows of one? ... Well, I was just thinking about it as I drink my morning coffee.

WOW! You've got 4 foot visibility? I sail on Galveston Bay alot. The running joke here is "IF you can see the bottom, it's too late." Mostly because it's sticking up out of the water. The other standard joke is "Why do the mullet jump so much? So they can see where they are going."

Seriously, I've seen clear to the bottom once. While I was standing in ankle deep water. So we set the anchor fairly stiffly so I don't have to dive on it. But I like the racing stripes idea for clearer water.

I have a 25# CQR anchor that is showing some signs of rust along the wearing edges. I sprayed it with the cold galvanizing paint available from West Marine a few years back with minimal success. I contacted a few local galvanizers in the southern New England area but they all want high minimums. I contacted Industrial Galvanizers (Tampa) and they wanted $500 minimum. Does anyone know of an east coast galvanizer who would do this at a more reasonable cost? Does anyone have a recent experience with Pacific Galvanizing (mentioned above)? Are they still doing this kind of work at a reasonable rate? Help is appreciated

check with the steel fabracators in your area and ask them if they have a load of steel going to the galvanizers and if they do how much they would charge you to put your anchor in with there order ....that should work out for you some times a $100.00 bill with get the job done nicely.....
