Hiee all,

Well after much time in reading talking etc etc about various paints I have decided on the
following for our project.

Hiee all, well I have finally decided on what I will be doing for paint.

Bottom side will get Pettit high build expoxy primer. From the reading I take
this to be somewhat of a barrier coat. Finish paint will be their Unepoxy Hard
antifouling paint.

The remaining hull will get Easypoxy undercoater and finished off with Easypoxy
Marine Polyurathane. The cabin,decks and cockpit will get the same undercoater
and finished of with a simigloss white Easypoxy Marine Polyurathane.

So she'll be a red bottom with darkgreen topsides with white cabin and decks.

Comments anyone ? esp about Pettit.

My Lancer will go through the same, and with about the same products . . . you go first! Mke sure you post pictures of the progress.

Great paints. But all this painting assumes you are starting with well-prepped bare gelcoat. The smallest flaws cannot be covered with the paint. But being a carpenter you already knew that.

Well we still have a foot of snow on the ground so I figure at the very earlist it will be the begining of April before I actually begin getting any paint onto the boat and likely not till the middle or third week :(. I am still hoping to splash her on our Victoria Day weekend in the later half of May.

I will post pictures and comments about how the work goes and my opinons about the product(s).

I hope there is a gold and silver paint for boot stripes as I think that would look rather nice, but failing that I guess plain ole white will have to do.

How is your non skid?

What will you use if you have to replace?

The non skid on my old Morgan is more gone than there so I'm exploring alternatives for replacing it.

I had a very old can of the interlux non skid stuff on the shelf bought for a different project that I sold before painting the decks. I wasn't happy with the powder like consistancy when I popped the top so went looking. I ended up buying a 25lb box of course ground walnut shells which I thought were going to fill my need. I did a little patch on a scrap of FG solid from another project (trimmed off an old FG box) and it looked ok.

Early this week I did the hatches, Interprotect epoxy primer, (broadcast) spread a thick layer of walnut shells, let dry and shake/blow off the loose stuff, then paint over the walnut shells.

It took about 5 times as much paint to cover the shells as it took to do the original primer! Holy cow, this is going to break me in boat paint! And, I intend to do a second top coat! Ouch!

So, I broke out the interlux non skid and mixed up a small batch with some left over 1 part poly (I never throw anything away) and did another test run.
This produced a surface that was non slip, but just barely. More dulled the paint than anything. And at boat paint prices.

Besides the horrible expensive paint sucking qualities of the shells, another problem is that after 1 layer of cover paint the texture is roughly that of a 16 grit grinding wheel. This would hurt to kneel on and a fall might end up with permanent disfigurement. Not that it would matter on me but other people might toss me over the side if they or thier kids lose some skin due to my bad work.

So, my next experiment will be the Rustoleum non skid additive, recommended last night by a guy that I know is much smarter than I and has done this more than twice.

I've got all the paint I need (new old stock) and cannot justify a couple hundred more $s on this. Like to try the Kiwi stuff but that will have to wait for more prosperous times and probably a more expensive boat.

Sand box sand (river)works well but don't use sanblasting sand it has sharp edges.

I went the expensive route and bought the (2) tiny little cans from Rustoleum. Had I known about sandbox sand.....

I just started using Kiwi grip on my boat. I've done about half of the nonskid so far and the results are very good. I did parts in the garage and it took overnight to cure. The sections I did on the boat cured to touch in about 30 minutes except for one section I did at about 6pm in the shade. It was still just as wet in the morning as when I applied it. Luckily it didn't rain that night, just a heavy dew. It set up pretty quickly when the sun came out.

I am currently at my yacht club waiting for my second coat of Interlux Ultra-Kote to dry so I can finish the squares where the boat stands were. I used the Pettit Protect to seal the bottom. just make sure you have the hull down to bare gel-coat or glass. It also seems to go less than you would think to get 3 full coats on. It is a pretty dark grey so it may keep your bottom paint on the darker end of its spectrum. Pecking on my cell phone with this post. I will ad some crappy cell phone photos when I get home.

A pic after applying the first coat of Interlux Ultra-Kote. The previous owner had used bottom paint over the boot stripe, so in the process of removing it I sealed that area too. I will put the boot stripe on later.




A closer pic, but still limited by my cell phone. It has not been a bad job, just a great amount of sanding and prep. I went through this with my 25 Oday so I knew what to expect.

Woohoo got the paint ordered yesterday

Well I have finally gotten around to getting the paint ordered. It will be in on this Tuesday coming. Now if only the weather would co-operate and warm up enough so that I can make some filler up and repair the damaged areas on the bow and get it preped for paint.

I have to admit I am NOT looking forward to doing the prep work on the bottom :(, but at least once it is cleaned up and done right then maintinace should not be such a chore :).

I will post some photo's as things progress.

Painting ?????

Ok I have gotten a bit of the bottom sanding done of late and the weather has been warm enough that I have been able to do some of the repair work to the bow as well. I see that we are to have a few days this week of sun and warmth so maybe I will get the remaining filler done and sanding and then at least the primer coats on topside and bottom.

My 1993 Hunter 23.5....Guys my white non skid is the only area on my deck and cockpit that needs repair/or paint? The non skid area alone has what appears to be tiny (the size of lead in pencil) holes in the non skid paint. Black in color very small
The non skid area that's on there now is white and looks like it was applied with a sponge. Its the non skid with swirly raised ( less than 1/8 inch) areas of paint.(non skid).
Question is do I need to sand this area,prime the same area, or can it just be painted with good non skid.
If later what would you recommend?...thanks in advance...fair winds...mark<>,

It sounds like it my be a mold problum and not the paint.I would pick up some Tile-X on the weekend and let it sit on the cockpit floor for at least 10 minutes then wash off. That should cleaned up your problem.

Could be mold but the nonskid on my boat had the same pinholes where the gelcoat was thin and/or old

In Mexico, to create non-skid, the local painter/glass guys put a coat of Imron on the deck and sprinkle course salt onto it while wet. After the paint dries, they then hose off the salt and put on a second coat of Imron once the water has evaporated. Leaves a very effective non-skid but it is a little hard on the shorts and knees.
