Good Day All: Does anyone know how to remove paint from gelcoat? I have a hand-painted design on the transom I would like to strip and repaint. Thanks.

sanding

Wet sanding with a 1500 grit to begin with plenty of water. finish with a 3000 grit sand paper alowing you to use a medium compond by hand then follow up with a wax.

EazyOff Oven Cleaner .....

The caustic in Easy Off Oven cleaner will 'lift' the paint, use a rubber scraper to 'persuade' the still-sticking paint. Then follow up with sanding w/1500, 2000 then 3000 grit, then powerbuff with the finest grit compound you can find. There will probably a paint shadow on the stern where the paint covered the gelcoat and did not let it fade as much as the exposed gelcoat ..... be patient as the the sun will quickly fade the 'shadow'.

Kleen Strip

Kleen strip makes a fiberglass paint stripper that i had pretty good luck with. west marine has it listed for 16 something a quart, but home depot/lowes will order it for you 4.99 a quart. Its consistancy of jelly. I pasted it on then used a old credit card as a scraper. To remove the remaining strips i used a piece of scotch brite with the stripper on it. Wiping the residue off with paper towels. Followed by a wipe down with acetone, it requires very little sanding. I work mainly on older boats that 1500 is a finishing grit, not a starting grit. wouldnt start with unless you can see your reflection aready. if your planing on repainting wouldnt go higher than a 300 anyways.

oven off works great

We have used this several times and it works great. The warmer the weather the better. Spray it on and let it sit for 10-15 min. Use a stiff brush and scrub it. It sometimes takes two or three treatments depending on how much paint was on there. You may find that there will be a raised area where it was painted. It will also be yellow where the paint was. It will bleach out in time.

Sorry Bill - also on paint removal etc.

We have new phone numbers 1-877-434-2089 (spillover order line) 1-510-868 0208 and new fax number: 510-868 0817, E-mail address is now islandgirlproducts@mac.com. Unfortunately autoresponder and newsletter stuff is still giving old data. We did get together on 1-800-441-4425 that has been kept as our only landline. With regards to pain removal from gelcoat: 1. You cannot use regular paint remover - it will strip the gelcoat. 2. Oven cleaner is very caustic and contains a little glycol ether. Caustsic accelerates the paint removal properties of glycol ethers. Be careful, use gloves and well rinse with water. There are some reports of yellowing of gelcoat after using oven cleaner. 3. If you have ANY IG cleanser, it can be used to remove painted lettering without damage to gelcoat, hypalon, rubber or vinyl. However, IG Pink is more gentle (use white scuff pad) and works faster in warm weather. 4. ONLY IG Pink can be used to remove paint or marker grafitti resins, sealants, tar (if you are short of mayonnaise!) without damage to underlying plastics (except cellophane or crazed acrylic). You can even use it safely on automobile or house paint. Hope this is of some the movie link shows all this with specific instructions given in a droning voice (mine!).
