My 1977 Hunter has hideous yellow laminate on panels throughout the boat. (Thank God the '70's upholstery is gone.) Does anyone have any experience with painting over laminate? What type of paint would work best? Thanks, Keith Mc

Maybe....

I know there are primers/paints for painting over home interior panelling. This might do the trick for you.

sand, prime and paint......

The important thing when painting slick and glossy surfaces is to degloss. I would recommend (regardless of primer and paint you decide on...ask paint store MANAGER) to sand lightly with 200 grit paper and then wash with TSP (paint store) to get all dust off and to aid in degloss. This will ensure that the primer, and ultimately the paint, will adhere properly. Happy painting.

not a laminate

u will find that that is not actually a laminate --not a high pressure on anyway like the formica on the counters--- but it sure was uguly :) light sanding and a good enamel took care of it -- just do not get too carried away with the sanding. If you pull a drawer, you will see how the surface is bonded to the playwood, almost a paper like material. pratice on a drawer side and you will find it very easy to change the look of the boat interior It takes paint very easily and holds up well terry

Epoxy Paint

I Had laminate in my 76 h30. I know it was laminate as I removed any that was loose. I to had the yellow and orange interior. The laminate that was not loose I sanded, then used a primer in a spray can called XIM. Over this I sprayed, (from a can) epoxy appliance paint. It has held up many years with no problems. Good luck with your project.
