Paint job

I plan to paint the cockpit in my '71 Daysailer. The paint is peeling badly and needs some serious attention. The boat was left to the elements for more than a year before I purchased it. I keep it covered but it stays a little wet from use. There seems to be so many paints available for marine uses that the choices get very confusing. I have a West Marine in my area which is usually my source of materials. I will be doing the work with a brush. Any suggestions on a recommended paint and brand would be appreciated.

Painting

The key to your paint job is in the preparation, before you even begin to paint. I would stip the interior with one of the semi-gel strippers, then rinse and rinse before painting. In the alternative, use a power drill and a wire cup brush to clean up your surfaces. As far as paint - there is a daysailer in our anchorage with the interior done with bilgecoat. The grey interior is set off with black non-skid tape and looks really surprisingly good. Functional and pretty. Bilgecoat doesn't care about being left underwater for extended periods of time and will not be harmed by fuel. Jusin - O'day Owners' Web
