We just removed the hatches from our 79 H30 in preparation for painting the decks. We are going to replace the acrylic in the hatches with lexan and paint the hatch frames. Can anyone recommend a paint that you've had achieved good results with? Do I have to strip the frames first or just ruff them up a little then paint?

Tammy,

I was using Awl-grip for my mast and spinnaker pole and another shade for the pedestal. So I bought black for the Bomar hatches. I replaced everything except the castings. Anyway, when I bought the needed paint, it cost nearly double what I was charged for the other stuff. We have a local shop that does powder coating. Their bid was about the same price as the paint was costing me and they do the sandblasting. They got the work. I sent the paint back. Also powder coating is an extra cost option from Bomar.

another way to go

Tammy, another way to go is to cover the hatches with Sunbrella to match your canvas. In the 30' Hunter 79 you will find this makes the v-beth cooler and allows you to sleep longer due to the sunrise waking you up (I don't belive in getting up with the sun on the week-ends). If you are going ahead, I have seen flat black exterior paint work quite well in this area. For painting the balance of the boat, I have just painted using the Interlux 1 part paint. Great stuff. Just rolled right on and covered the previous coats. I think I used 2 1/2 quarts to do the entire topside. Also put in a can of Interlux anti-slip for non skid. Good luck Ian s/v Meant to Be

Powdercoating hatches

I tried to get a local boatyard to give me an estimate on painting the mast boot & was told "Just buy a new one, they're cheap enough". Well, I found the Kenyon website, figured out which boot I had and gave them a call...... $200.00 *yks. I don't know where that employee is from (clearly he isn't a native Mainer) cause I don't call $200.00 cheap. Anyway, I think I am going to try a couple automotive places. Fred, are you saying that you got the hatches powdercoated for the cost of a quart of Awlgrip? The inside of the hatches are just fine, mint condition, it's the outside that needs some help. They are starting to look silver not black. I've been to your site, you put a lot of work into that boat & it looks great:). Ian, We are using Interlux to paint our deck. We chose Hatteras Off White but haven't decided what color non-skid to use yet, probably will use beige. We haven't been able to paint yet as we haven't had an overcast day that it didn't rain. It's starting to look like we are going to have to pitch a tent over the boat to get it painted. I wanted to paint first then install the new portlights so that we didn't have to try and paint around them, but it's looking like that's exactly what I will end up having to do. Thanks for your input

Tammy,

A thought! (yes the Awlgrip was close to the same price, and that didn't count my labor) Thanks for the nice comments too! OK, back to the 'thought'. Did you see the black stuff other than the hatches? When I was doing the spars, I asked the Awlgrip rep what I could use for the castings at the ends of the boom and mast. (I didn't need much pricey Awlgrip) He said to go to Home Depot and buy a can of black epoxy appliance spray paint. I did. It's still perfect. Price? Less than five bucks. I know of no reason that it wouldn't work for what you want to do. What have you got to loose? One more Home Depot product to add to my web site list. Tammy, thanks again. :) P.S. Did you see the new topside stripes? #93.1 and 95.1

Hey Fred !!

That thing at the end of the boom is supposed to be black??? How long ago did you paint? I am assuming that the mast boot is aluminum. Did you soak the parts is acid to remove any corrosion before painting? I like your stripes. I was thinking about painting a stripe on the hull to replace the 3 rows of ugly gray tape. How did you trim the windows so that they were flush with the trim ring?

I painted the black two years ago.

If it started failing today, it would still be an OK deal with me but it's still perfect. The hull is next. We're still brainstorming on it. The ports were marked as per Becksons web site and rough cut on my table saw and then sanded with my small bench belt sander. If at all possible use a band saw. If someone said that to me before I started, I would have bought one just for this job. Safety alone is enough of a reason. Time saved is another.
