Hey Everyone, I've got a 1977 C-30 that I've put some money into (new diesel, new rudder, new keel bolts, some cosmetics, new headsail is on the way) and I'd like to get her painted, as the gel coat is VERY porous and it always looks dirty

I once met a guy...

who had invested over $40,000 in his 1978 C-30. He was very happy with the results (it DID look good). He also had every upgrade imaginable. He told me that it was going to be his last boat. He had no desire to move up or head out cruising and this was the boat he was going to daysail for the rest of his life. So for him it made sense to upgrade until he could get the most possible pleasure out of that boat. Are you planning on keeping your boat? Very few of us will ever be able to sell our boats for what we have in them and the difference between what we spent and what we sell for is the real cost of ownership. Only you can decide if its worth it. If you think it is go for it and dont be bothered by anyone else who doesn't understand your decision or values. Also, you do have other options than a $6500 paint job. I would try the PolyGlow kit and see if that makes her shine. A lot of others on this list claim that its good stuff. If you still want new paint you could try doing it yourself or helping with as much prep as possible to lower the cost.

I would consider trying Island Girl or PoliGlow products first. As Rick said, it's very rare to get as much out of a boat as you've put in
