Does anyone know what size the packing nut and locking nut is on my 2005 Hunter 36 propeller shaft. Engine is a 3YM30G. Can't find it in specs and don't want to spend 34.00 for a 1 1/2 inch open wrench if it is too big or too small. Soft hose shows 1 3/4 inches in manual and nut looks the same but I don't know. Space too small for any type of pipe wrench. It leaks more than that which is allowable when underway and needs the 1/4 turn to tighten it. thank you.barrile

On the 33 the wrench sizes are 1 7/8" and 2". Same for H326 and H336. Can't say for sure about the 36 but more than likely the same.

Happy to see someone looking for the correct tools.

Thanks for the comments. I bought the small pipe wrench and will see if it works, otherwise I'll spring for the 1 7/8" and 2" wrenches and just leave them on the boat. It's worth $60 if necessary to have the right wrenches in order to stop the shaft from leaking excessively.

thanks to Warren also

Warren, I actually checked out similar looking ones at West Marine and clicked on 2 comments and both were negative so stayed away from it, but thank you for your reply.

Forget the adjustable one...

I was unable to get it to hold with any pressure applied. I went through Fawcetts in Annapolis, http://www.fawcettboat.com/about_us.htm who put me in touch with these guys who make them. http://www.pyacht.com/shophome.html I called them on the phone. While their standard ones did not fit, they custom cut two of their standard ones to fit the size I needed. You need one for the packing nut and one for the lock nut to do it right. The total for the two was about $80 plus shipping.

Rigid makes a nice adjustable FLAT jaw pack wrench- about $30 at HD- plumbling section. The flat jaw is better built than the WM one and its slighly off-center handle. The corrugated jaw of the typical pipe wrench will chew up and burr the bronzy packing edges!

Home Depot sells an asjustable packing nut wrench for about $17. Should fit all size glands.
I bought a pair of these the other day and they do the job... best thing about HD is if it doesn't work... return them!
