@Project_Mayhem,

Dave,

Ou are putting a lot of money into your new boat and upgrading things as you go…this might be a good time to consider switching to a dripless seal of some sort.

i like the Volvo Penta dripless rubber seal, for its low cost and simplicity. But as we discussed, I do “burp” it every time I open the engine intake because it is right there in the engine bilge. If that is not convenient on your boat, you could consider a design that has an air line on it for purging air out of the seal. The PYI version allows for that.

Greg

I like the simplicity of the Volvo seal but I can guarantee you that myself or someone else is going to forget to burp it. I took a look at the options including ones with the burp tube. After considering costs, potential catastrophic failures and routine maintenance costs, I decided to go with GFO packing which is almost dripless

I opted to go with the LasDrop lip seal for the same reasons. I like that it is a vented packing so does not need to be burped. It uses a very heavy duty silicon shaft log rather than the soft bellows on other dripless seals. I was also able to install two spare seals on the shaft so that when/if a seal starts to drip, I can pull the old one out while in the water and the shaft coupling in place and press the new seal in.
