I've just discovered that my drive shafts' packing gland on my 1978 Catalina 30 is leaking way too much (almost a steady stream). It looks pretty mechanical and easily fixed by tightening the nut. Am I wrong about this. Is there anything I should know or watch for when tightening the nut? I will have a large pump at the ready. Thanks for any advice Tracy

Tighening packing gland

You can easily tighten the packing gland by loosening the lock nut, tightening the packing nut, then locking it all in place again with the lock nut. You should have a slow drip when the shaft is turning, no drips when the shaft is statiionary. Don't overtighten: some water flow is needed when the shaft is turning to lubricate it and keep it cool. If you can't get it adjusted properly, you may need to have it repacked, since the packing may be worn out. While you're there, check the condition of the rubber hose and the hose clamps (should be double clamped on each end). This hose/clamp combo must be in good shape to keep the ocean out of your boat! Good luck. Randy

I agree with technique for decreasing drip on packing gland, but I found out on our boat it was a 2 person deal. Someone had to adjust nuts while someone started engine to seat packing gland for proper drip. The person downside had to watch for drips. This maybe took 10 tries. It was adjusted a little one way or the other too much. That was about 3 years ago and everything is fine.
