I own a H30 with a ysm-12 yanmar diesel engine.While replacing the stuffing in the packing gland the outer shroud of the gland cracked.I was still able to tighten the gland down and adjust it to working condition but i would very much like to replace the entire part.The prop shaft is 1'.Can anyone give me atleast the proper direction to complete this project.I know i have to haul the boat but is this an expensive and long process or is it basically straight forward and relatively easy repair?Thanks for all the advice

1) Haul Boat
2) Remove coupling from shaft. This is usually much easier said than done because the coupling rusts to the shaft and then generally can't be re-used. (if the coupling comes off rust free then it can likely be reused. Any rust will destroy the .001 or tighter tolerance fit and you should replace if rusted.
3) Remove old stuffing box
4) Replace stuffing box with new PSS or Buck Algonquin or Spartan traditional style.
5) If you can remove the shaft it is a very good idea to take it to a prop shop and have them fit and face the new coupling to the shaft.
Removing the coupling with be the toughest part..
Are you doing the work yourself? Been there done that...not too difficult a process. You need patience.
First part is silmiliar to Main Sail response. I recommend to remove the prop shaft. The prop coupling need to come out. I used a 3-jaw bearing puller and it was easy getting the coupling to release.
Slide the shaft down till the prop gently touches the rudder and slide the stuffing box off. It took me one afternoon to replace the stuffing box and packing gland. I would go with the a new stuffing box instead of the PSS. There are many pros and cons in this forum. Personal preference.
