Does anyone have a good link for instructions (or experience in) replacing the packing gland on a 1981 Hunter 30' ? The owner's manual is very sparse as far as any details.

Do you want to replace the entire gland, or repack the gland you have now? Mainesail's excellent tutorial appears to cover the latter, not the former. To replace the gland itself, you probably have to disengage the coupler from the transmission, often the hardest part of the job. Once you've done that, it's a "simple" matter of removing the hose clamps from the gland and sliding the unit off the shaft and sliding a new unit on. But as we know, even the "simplest" of jobs on one's one boat can often be difficult. When I replaced my OEM white derlin gland on my H28.5 with a conventional bronze gland, I began the process by soaking the bolts on the coupler with PB Blaster a week before hand. I did this a few more times before actually trying to loosen them. I also tapped them gently with a ball peen hammer. They and the coupler came off fairly easily, but some people have had trouble doing this and have used pullers to get the coupling off. Since I was decoupling the shaft anyway, I also replaced the cutless bearing at the same time. Don't forget to check and/or adjust engine alignment once you recouple the shaft.

Thanks!

Thanks! That's exactly what mine looks like (although not quite that clean and polished...)
Appreciate the link, Captain - now I can get to work.!

THE resident expert, Maine Sail, possibly has the best photo essay on repacking anywhere: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/stuffing_box . Your H30 stuffing box is identical to mine so this should be exactly what you need. Of course his will be much cleaner than ours.
