Do any P42 owners mount their outboard on the rail? If so where and how. Pictures would be great.

If yes to first question do you use a lift. If so what kind and where mounted. Pictures would be great

Hi Keith, have always mounted our five horse Mercury on the port side stern rail where it rides nicely. No lift other than by hand. I've always mounted and dismounted the motor from the lower transom step. I'll send pictures if I have any.

Update, pictures of where I carry our OB: https://hunter.sailboatowners.com/images/kb/med/m_1194.jpg

Both good ideas. I like the engine mounted on the back. A 5 HP would be great mine came with a working 9.9 it is a little to heavy to trust I won't drop it.

My docking skills are still a work in process - so I'm hesitant to have an OB or anything else hanging off the side of the boat.

I carry a 15 HP Mercury (which I believe weighs the same as the 9.9 HP--about 80 lbs). I use a crane which is depicted in one of the photos. I use a 4-purchase block on the crane to hoist and lower the outboard. As you'll see in one of the photos, the wooden mount is made up of two thick pieces of teak that I bolt together from both sides of the rail on the starboard quarter. I used a router to cut out the portion that sits directly over the rails.
My railing is a bit beefier than OEM since I have buttressed it with a mount for a wind generator, so I really don't experience any issues with sturdiness. For a while I carried a 20 HP 4-stroke, which was far too heavy for the set-up, so I went back to the 15 HP 2-stroke. It has done well there for all conditions, and it's enough for us to get up and plane using our Avon as a "sport boat."
As an aside, I often use the same 4-purchase block to lift our Avon (3.4 meter model with wooden floorboards) onto the sundeck using the end of the boom. I swing it over the port side, attach the shackle on the end of the block to the lift straps, and then swing it over the sundeck using the boom once I get it raised. It's a bit of work, but easier than muscling it up and over the rails on the port quarter.
Cheers,
Paul

I don't have a P42 - but do carry my 9.9 on the stern rail of my 1984 Catalina 36 (no sugar scoop) - I use a Canadian (eha) product called swing-lift (swing-lift.com). It controls the motor as it is raised and lowered so it doesn't swing and bash the back of the boat. It uses the main halyard (or topping lift). I really like it.

Les, the swing-lift.com solution is quite nice and simple. Looks like it could be 'home built' relatively easily. I may put that on my project list.....

The hoop can easily be replicated - not so sure about the hook that holds the OB. It automatically clips into the hoop and doesn't just rely on the 2" web to keep the motor from swinging.

I think the options mounting off the stern rail are much better one less thing to deal with especially docking in high winds
