I have a 1991 H42 (hull #95) which has a 8kw generator (Model on the plate is 8CC063). I have no information on the diesel engine that drives this and I can't see any model number info on the engine. Does anyone know what engine drive these? (mine is a 3 cylinders) Thanks.

Hi Jim. Ours is a 1991 (hull #40) that has an 8KW Genset driven by a three cylinder Kubota marinized diesel tractor engine. It's model number is 8MDKDR31457C. A bit noisy, but a real dependable workhorse. Very handy while out on our extended cruises.

Well except for the sea water pump impeller and the fuel lift pump power wire plastic am-phenol connector. Just a minor frustrating inconvenience. The impeller was a pull-your-hair-out trouble shooting experience. If you have not read my thread about these two experiences, you can read it here: Onan Cummins 8KW Genset Issue

Terri - thank you! Your write-up is exactly the situation I'm experiencing - seawater is not pumping thru the engine.

Given the location of the generator, batteries and inverter it is very difficult to trace things out (I'll be pulling things out once I start working on the unit). Can you confirm my suspicions from the pictures below?

I believe the seawater is driven thru the pump that is in the lower left hand corner of the picture (it has a separate small dedicated belt - driven from the main crank). Is that the only seawater pump on the unit and likely the Oberdorfer? I've included a picture from the back side of the pump and it's quite corroded as if the shaft seal has failed and may be where the air is incoming.

And can you tell me where you were able to source the impellor? (I also want to replace all the belts)

I suspect your write-up saved me a lot of detective work. Thank you!

Hi Jim, that looks more like the engine circulation cooling pump, not the sea water pump. The sea water pump is an Oberdorfer brand on our engine with access through the main engine door, port side. The pump is right next to the generator housing and a PITA to work on. Please call me at 425/513-9673 and I can help you with some of the details. The pump cover is held in place with four small hex bolts. The best tool to loosen is a box wrench; forget the size.

Terry - thanks for the phone consultation - it's appears we have different generators. For the record here's the side of my gen. If I figure out what engine it is I'll post it on this thread.

I'll use your troubleshooting steps to figure out the problem. Thanks again for the pointers.

My 9KW Kolher uses a Yanmar 3 cylinder 16 hp engine.
I can help if yours is a Yanmar.
Jim...

PS: I am dang sure that is a Yanmar engine. The exhaust Riser looks like my Yanmar.

That sure looks like a Yanmar 3HMF engine.. The HM shop manual says that the difference between the propulsion engine and the genset engine is, on the genset, the oil filter is on the governor side and the speed control is fixed at 1800 RPM. The sea water impeller for that engine is Yanmar part # 124223-42092. It is 50.8mm in od, and 22.1mm wide ..

You're welcome, Jim. Forgot to mention, the model number on our Genset is located on a plate attached to the very front of the generator. Perhaps others can tell you where it is on your Kohler unit, if not there. While you take a break from your trouble shooting efforts, if you've not seen any of my YouTube cruising videos, this one will help wile away the time:

Thank you JamesG and Kloudie - you were correct this is a Yanmar 3HMF - after removing the starting battery I was able to see the identification plate. Also thanks for the seawater impellor dimensions - that helped me find the correct one.

Terri - nice video - it is a lot of work/time putting one together. I've seen several H42 vids on youtube - most recently I've been following JibSea. A young couple from Canada going to Bahamas - they claim they don't have sailing experience - if so they're fast learners.

Thanks again - my generator is on the mend.

my generator is on the mend.
TIP: Change the pencil Zinc on that engine every 500 hours!

It was hard to change, but the Original Owner had a spare and never changed it.
Mine is located under the Heat Exchanger.
Jim...

PS: Mine is not connected electrically to my Engine shaft Zinc, therefore you can get Galvanic Corrosion on that Yanmar.:yikes:
