My back tells me I need to install a windlass on my P39-2. The small shallow anchor compartment make this a bit of a challange. Anyone with experiance, suggestions or pictures on what type of windlass, location, and chain pipe modifications/install on a Pearson 39??

My P36-2 is a similar set up and came with a windlass. It is mounted aft of the anchor locker, however I do not use it as it is a pain. The rode does not drop in the locker due to it being shallow. I have considered cutting an opening to expose the large area underneath the locker and lead the rode down there, which in that case the windlass would work fine. Gravity would drop the rode in place rather than having to coil it as is comes in.

Good Luck

Thanks for the idea NYSail. I think I'll have to do something similar and allow the rode to drop into the bow area below the locker. The problem is that area is currently sealed off from the anchor locker. I'm a bit concerned about opening it up to water and anchor chain mud which will then end up in my bilge. I guess that will be the trade off.

My boat came with a non-working Maxwell windlass and I am about to repair or repllace the motor and wiring to it. I think opening the bottom of the anchor well is the best solution however, being careful how to feed the line in by using a towel as it is fed down thru the floor is how I have been able to eliminate most of the water from getting in. As for the anchor and chain, I whip it back and forth before it gets onto the deck if I see mud from the Chesapeake floor. So far I still have the strength to do that! Plan B is to have crew and a bucket available for washing off chain.
