P33-2 Performance

I currently own a 1976 P28-1. I love the way she sails and she is very competitive when racing. How does the P33-2 satck up against other racer/cruisers? Does she sail to her rating well? I think the PHRF in this area is 147.ThanksTim R.

I have not been able to make my 1987 P33-2 fin keel perform to its phrf rating. However, there was another in the fleet that performed very well but had a centerboard. This past season I had a new 135 genoa that helped performance a bit but I did not compete this year. So much so I plan to add a new main this year. Also, choose your bottom paint wisely. Racing aside she is seakindly easy to sail and comfortable down below. Except to move up to a 36 or 38 footer I wouldn't want any other boat.

Surprising

That surprises me. A fin keel will usually sail better especially upwind. They may be flying a 155 though. It is really hard to sail to a PHRF on my boat without the 155.She does appear very comfortable. I have been aboard a similar P28-2 with the rear cabin and that was nice. I can only imagine the P33-2 being very comfortable.Can you recommend any weaknesses I should look for when I start shopping?Tim R.

I purchased a 1990 P33-2 with a wing keel this past spring. After sailing her for the season I can tell you this is an excellent sailing boat.It goes well in light air, I out sailed a Jeanneau 37 in 5-8 knts. In 15 knts or more this boat will do well over 7 knts beating according to my gps.In over 20knts with a reef in the main the boat sailed very well with no weather helm and it is a dry boat.

That's great. How high can you point? I have sailed a few 30+ ft. boats with wing keels and they did not point well at all. A Sabre 36 and a Beneteau 41. I later raced against the Sabre 36 and beat them quite easily.Tim R.
