We are interested in moving up from our beloved 37.5 (1991). As such we are considering the center cockpit passage 42 around the 91 vintage. I am not enthrolled with in mast furling . We have had a look around one vessel offered for sale in Vancouver BC and generally we liked the layout. One big question sticks in my mind. How do you sercice the engine on the galley side . It looked almost impossible to get at at the boat we looked at. would appreciate any comments concerning the p 42 , including possible problems and things to watch out for. thanx Mike & Val

Hi Mike, you're right, the starboard side...

of the engine can be a challenge. Disconnecting and reconnecting the engine shutoff cable was worse than the number six fuel nozzle on a J79 jet engine. No easy answer, but it depends on what the repair is, if any. We've had our 1991 going on five years, our best choice. A traditional sloop with Autohelm 7000, Genset, two reverse cycle heat pumps. Check out several knowledge base articles that I and others have written. Just returned from a two month cruise to the Broughton Islands staying one night at Point Roberts Marina on the return leg. She is fast, stiff, easy to sail solo and lots of creature comforts. Our P42 came with a SS holding tank. The aluminum tanks of this vintage will need replacing. Ronco has plastic replacements for around $250. Ours is still okay. Terry
