P 23 coming home today

Struck a deal yesterday. I guess first on list, get motor running. Tohatsu 4 strk, it was parked and not drained of gas last year,I hope ethanol hasn`t hurt it. Then,boat off the trailer at a friends pier for trailer inspection and repairs, (they always need something!). Then ,back home to start my list. P.O. had boat about 6 yrs,he was not an extremely active sailor or very mechanically minded. He never fixed the lights badly neglected by P,O.`s.

Hull and gelcoat are very good, no surface cracks or impacts anywhere. Interior clean, dry, factory table and post,2brnr. alcohol stove, not pressurized type (according to my (friend/mentor) who a went along on the looksee. Can I use Coleman fuel? ,If not, what type alcohol? I do have a Seagrams supply going unused due to the diet!!
Need the handle for cockpit bilge pump, who knows what all else yet.
This summer, weekend decisions will be "Sail P18 or work on P23" ?Actually, pretty good decisions to have to make.
Probably won`t be getting hats made with the boat name this time....

Congratulations on your purchase. Is the alcohol stove a non-pressure Origo (spelling?)? Always take the canisters outside to fill them and carefully use a funnel to avoid spilling. Denatured alcohol from the hardware store is probably the least expensive fuel. We have liked our alcohol stoves. Be sure to close the burner opening to slow the evaporation of the alcohol when not in use. Ours originally had a rubber disk to help seal the opening and the cover.

Change the name, please. Then you can opt for the hats.

Orego 3000. I thought I read somewhere you place some sort of fuel wad or ring under the burner?. Control knobs low to hi opens a smaller to larger hole under the burner..I`m going to search online for more info, I guess.

Only use alcohol in that stove. Coleman fuel (white gas) could be a disaster.

Denatured Alcohol

Nice looking P23. Your stove should use denatured alcohol. Doesn't evaporate as fast if you place the rubber disks between the canisters and the heat control opening after the burner cools. I usually buy the alcohol at hardware store in quart containers. The stove works pretty good.

Bart at Precision is a great person to work with as he is most helpful. Suggest watching the cover plate for the shroud chain plates primarily caulking to be changed every three or four years. Good boat. I use to be a dealer for them but now retired.

FYI check the Tohatsu outboard blogs. The enine you have and Mercury are the same engine only with different company decals. If you are interested, the hosepower can be increased by installing the 6hp carburator which is an easy bolt on application. That is the only difference between the 4hp and 6hp motor other than the excessive price for a 6hp decal. It cost $58.00 for the carb. Mine has been converted and I am very happy with it.

I e mailed Tohatsu with the serial number. Reply tells me I have a 2009 ,6HP long shaft. Actually ,they call it "Ultra long", 25".

Tom , that rally is on my radar, I saved the email you sent a while ago about it, thanks.
I was working in the cabin a little last night. I hooked up a battery, and I do have power at the switch/fuse box. That`s half the battle. I had the stern running light and 2 interior cabin lights on,but very faint. The entire switch/fuse box is in poor condition,corroded, solder links broken, I`m gonna contact Precision about a replacement.
A VERY BIG deal is I`ve found a shop that will do trailer inspection and needed repairs ( i already know I`m gonna do tires) with the boat on the trailer. This means I can save a lot of time getting the boat overboard somewhere,work done,then back on the trailor at home for repairs to lights.right now I`m thinking lights, spreader boots, wax,then down to the marina to set the mast up,try it out . The rest of the (long)list can be caught up gradually and in the fall. (I hope).
