From my post "Fools query on furling main sail" I learned from Moody Buccaneer of "in boom furling systems" As I own a Macgregor with a fold down mast, weight would be primary concern, and suggestions to go for in-boom furling system are well taken. Does anyone out there own such system and can correspond with me about it or willing to post here my email.... info@kauai-honeymoon.com Ray

Why on a Mac?

I dont have the specs on any in-boom furling but I would suspect that weight would be a problem, but not your biggest one. A few years back I considered an IN-Boom furling system for my Catalina 30. The precision of installation can be quite a nightmare if not done properly. If you raise and lower your mast regularly, I dont think it would be a practical solution. I realy dont know much about them though and sometimes new technological developments cure all of the old ailments. My real question to you would be.....WHY? The canvas on a Mac is small enough and light enough to be easily handled. ALSO>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The added weight of an IN-Boom or mast furling system will certainly throw a light displacement boat like a Mac out of balance by raising the center of gravity. Could lead to a roll-over situation. Besides, any furling system you add to a Mac, other than on the jib, defeats the purpose of simplicity of the Macs. You either should add your own lazy jacks or buy another boat.

ease when solo

Knowing nothing about these furling systems, I'm starting from scratch. A furling system on mast would definitely make raising mast difficult. But perhaps not so much if weight is low on boom. ? Center of gravity consideration is good one, and I'll need to find out about weight of in boom system itself. To be able to control everything solo from cockpit is idea, perhaps foolish and I'm open to being told that.

Furling main

Although I have a mast furling main and love it, I would say that it's not worth the many dollars they cost. You can rig a standard main to be single-handling. I would never buy a furling main.

Solo all the time-hunter 290

I solo my 290 all the time and don't have in boom or in mast, all lines come into cockpit, wait until you find out cost of in boom and also very heavy, way too heavy to be raising mast and add the in boom, set up your boat for single handling, all you need is auto pilot.

You can rig..........

There are lots of ways, generally all are very INexpensive, to be able to raise yand lower your main and jib from the cockpit. All the require is a few cheap pulleys (blocks) and rope (line) and also make yourself a set of lazy jacks, you will love them. I put them on every boat i owned including an old Mac 25 and except for my current boat which i have not yet had time to do. These systems are simple and relatively fool proof.
