Cat Direct has manuals that they produce, which is what you want. Original "owners manual" from Catalina for early boats didn't have much info.

Her are two different online manuals

I phoned Catalina Yachts, the builder, not to be confused with CatalinaDirect, the parts supplier. Catalina Yachts mailed me a 1977 manual for free, and the tech I spoke to said that they didn't have any older manuals remaining, but the '77 manual is pretty similar. My opinion is that so is the '87, just don't go by the standing rigging sizes for your older boat from the '87 manual. I found a 1977 owners manual on internet search (should be about the same as your 72) and you can print it off. Like Peter said it won't answer all your questions but it's interesting.
