I have just bought an '88 Oday 272 and wonder if there is an Owner's Manual. I got it through a Broker. I am planning to launch the boat in the next ten days and I am not familiar with the proper sequence stepping the mast. Will the Marina know how to do it or will I have to show them. I'd appreciate some coaching from a 272 Owner. Is there an Owners Manual I should have? I have figured out most of the Rigging. Unfortunately the previous Owner can't be reached.

Dieter, Congratulations!!

Dieter, For information on parts, accessories, and owners manuals, go to the Home Page and click on Oday links, then Oday Web Ring, and from there Oday Parts and Accessories. You will enter the wonderful world of Rudy Nickerson, probably the most frequently recommended parts and accessories supplier at this (or any other) site for Oday sailboats. His phone number is (508)644-3001. Fax is (508)644-3002. Stepping and unstepping the mast on the 272 can be tricky because it is somewhat difficult to line up the hinge on the step with the plate on the cabin top before trying to raise the mast. I always worried about breaking the ears off the plate. I recently removed the old step after struggling with it for 6 yrs. and replaced it with a Dwyer tabernacle step which required some machining and refitting. I am now able to raise and lower the mast using a gin pole without the assistance of the boatyard folks. I would not try to step the mast myself the first time if I were you. If you were to tip the mast slightly to one side or the other while raising it, the ears which align the mast with the deck-mounted step plate could twist out of alignment or snap off. My advice is to have the boatyard folks do it for you using the crane at the launch until you understand it better, or get some help from another ODay owner who has stepped the mast. I have an owners manual for my '86 272 which I inherited from the previous owner when I purchased the boat. I have found it useful in a lot of ways. Hopefully you can get one through Rudy Nickerson. If not I could fax you some specific pages if there is something in the manual that speaks to a problem or question you have about the boat that can't be answered on this site. One last suggestion. Check out the reviews for the 272 and 272LE. Go to Boat Reviews on the Home Page and select the 272. There are reviews and a list of owners on that page. I'm listed there and would be happy to talk to you about the boat if you want to send me an e-mail. Enjoy your new toy!! Tom Ehmke

Congratulations!

Dieter, I agree with Tom, either ask another owner for assistance or have the boatyard do it the first time. By the way, I'm just east of Rochester at Pultneyville. I'm always asking for assistance and advice (and giving it back). I had to un-step my mast for the first time this past fall and had at least 4 experienced volunteers helping. I never hesitate to ask other more experienced folks for help - it's how everyone learns. If you are looking for a club, PYC is nice and quiet, very affordable and only ~30 min. from Rochester with great, protected lake access. You can get to our web-site at http://hometown.aol.com/bristol32/index.html Good luck! I have to hit the road, we're launching today. Dan

Manuals for 272

Dieter, Congrats on your 272. My wife and I picked up a one owner 272 with a diesel Westerbeke last summer. It came with all of the original manuals (Oday manual, engine, CDI roller furling, etc)for the boat and engine. We happen to have a copy machine in our basement and I could get you copies of what you need. Headed to the boat this evening and will be back Sunday night, let me know what you need and how to get it to you. Post any questions you have, I have found this site to be most helpful and there are some great owners out there sharing info. Frank

contact info for modified tabernacle

I just sent my tabernacle out yesterday to get the "mod". There's a group of 272 owners out in Jersey that have come up with some good ideas. The price is pretty reasonable. I just bought my boat last Nov and found the port ear broken off (done by "marina professionals"). The guy who does it is Ed Laviano and can be reached at 631-286-8368. He is setting up his maching eqpt Monday to do a hanfull of them. You and probably UPS it to him and get it back quickly. Good Luck Jeff Dowling

272 mast stepping

Hi Dieter- Congratulations on your new 272. I bought mine new in '86 and have been enjoying it ever since. It's a great boat. As for the mast, I've always had the yard do it or a friend of mine and I would do it using a hoist mounted on the roof of a boathouse. It's tricky and takes good coordination and planning when it was just the two of us, especially with the furling gear. As far as hoisting using the step as a hinge, I did it once, but it has to go perfectly. One ear got broken off the step years ago (not during the hinging routine, but by a yard), but it doesn't effect integrity once the mast is up and secured. Enjoy the summer!
