Thanks

Last week's Hunter Rendezvous at Solomons was our first and it was a blast. My wife and I had a great time. The program, accomodations, food, gifts, sponsors, band, etc. were super. The planning committee deserves all of our thanks for your efforts.

Dang It!

Phil, et al, I really hate that I missed the rendezvous at Solomons. I had planned on being there but couldn't quite get all the work things rescheduled. I plan to be there next year. Hope everyone had a blast! Regards, Dick Vance H-25.5 "Honey Bear" "Work is the bane of the sailing class!"

Solomons Rendezvous wish

Went to the Solomons rendezvous with my wife. This was the second one for me and first for her. We were under whelmed. Problem was that I paid $120 for both of us and we could only attend Thur night dinner (good) and then Fri night (Bob had a great slide show) and Sat. We went home Sat night since not much was happening Sun. All the fun lectures occurred on Fri when we had to work. Yeah it was nice seeing people with a common interest but for $120 we got a boat bag (next time my wife will come in her own boat so we can get two bags!) and a few toys. The round table was nice but it was too short. Got to talk with Yanmar and Harken after first listen to others ask them some questions but then the round table was all over. How about some lectures on Sat also. Guess I should have only paid the $30 each for just Sat. Rest of it was wasted for us.

We need to get you out to a HAPS meeting sometime to talk. You don't have to go far for those.

DJ: I'm sorry to hear you were so unimpressed. There were many agonizing months trying to detemine a fair price for the Rendezvous, considering all the things that go into it, the site, tent, food, drink, tables, chairs, PA system, lining up sponsors and speakers, begging manufacturers for raffle items, etc. Considering the fact the up until Jan 99 Hunter wasn't answering our calls, we had a very nervous planning committee trying to determine whether we were going to be able to pull this event off at all. Lucky for us, Tidewater and Nortons jumped into the fray with both feet and gave the "industry" the push we needed. We'll discuss the possibility of changing the events, presentations on Sat, round table and fun events on Fri. And yes, you could game the system and register as two seperate individuals in order to receive two boat bags, 4 t-shirts and 4 hats (why didn't I think of that). Or you could consider taking two days vacation time and sail your boat down (yes, it will cost you $70 more for a mooring at Zahnizers) which is what I did. This too was my second Rendezvous. Last time we arrived by land for just Sat. We felt sort of out of it, but friends kept telling us it is a whole different experience if you can stay the entire time on your own boat. And after doing it this time, I have to agree. We certainly want people to feel they got their moneys worth during this event, that is why we try to provide different choices to fit each individuals schedule. But we realize that we are not going to be everything for everybody. We do the best we can for an all volunteer organization. If you have any additional suggestions, please write Dale Seastrom (the person with who you sent your registration fee) We are always willing to learn how to put on a better event. Thanks Mark

Mark, Thank you for your reply.Yes I whined a bit. I understand many people put in a lot of time to make things work without much support from Hunter (one of the re-occuring problems with my boat is lack of support from Hunter; have given up on them for assistance; thank heavens for this web site!) I do think that Sat and Sun events need to be beefed up a bit for those that can't take the time off to be there Thurs and Fri. A schedule of events published beforehand may help. Hope to see some changes for the better at the next rendezvous. Easy to say and yes hard to do. Thanks again, DJ

Since it only happens once every 2 years...

It's worth taking a vacation day or two to attend so you can be there on Friday. Sunday would be a difficult day to schedule any events 'cuz many people who come by boat need most of the day to sail home. Besides... The purpose of any rendevous isn't only "educational"...they're an opportunity for people to make new friends and discuss common issues among themselves...and socialize together. The Saturday round tables were so lightly attended that they were really a waste of time for the vendors and "experts" who came only to do them...at least 75% of the people were either sailing their own boats in the race, or had gone along on someone else's...and it was so hot in the tent in the afternoons--on Friday AND Saturday--that those who weren't racing were seeking relief from it elsewhere. Speaking of the race, many in the fleet had never raced before (and some made that VERY obvious! <g>)...so that event was both a lot of fun AND part of the "educational" offering...'cuz it gave 'em an opportunity to participate in a race that--unlike most others--no one took seriously enough to take the fun out of it for anyone. And unless my view from the committee boat was all wrong, everyone had a ball out there! That was followed by the "blindfold dinghy race"...something both adults and children could enjoy and was hilarious. So Saturday was a FULL day! I do agree that a firm schedule of events should be set and published ahead of time (I was AWOL from my own Saturday round table--doing race committee instead-- 'cuz I didn't know I was scheduled to do one...fortunately it didn't matter 'cuz everyone who'd have attended was racing). And because it can--and did--get so HOT in the tent, it might be a good idea to start earlier in the mornings, have seminars and round tables only in the mornings...and perhaps have them on all three days, with other fun events in the afternoons. But those are my only criticisms/suggestions. The time and effort Dale and Kim Seastrom and Laura Dent put into organzing this event literally consumed their lives for nearly a year...They deserve nothing but the highest praise we can offer them for a job that was incredibly difficult, and exceptionally well done!! Anyone who could have come, but didn't, missed a truly great event!

My 2 cents worth

Thanks to Laura, Kim, Dale, and everyone involved in the Chesapeake Rendezvous. It was a marvelous time in spite of the oppressive heat. We had 4 adults and a squirt registered and received the same captain's bag as everyone else. But, I didn't attend for the stuff. It was for the fun, friends, and FOOD! (Did I mention that I won a haulout/powerwash/relaunch and an overnight slip in the raffle.) I had a great time meeting new people, renewing old acquaintances, and otherwise getting into whatever was going on. Has anyone mentioned the great job that Zanhizer's did? Their facilities are first class and their staff was always helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly (especially the bartenders). They were particularly good when we were unable to leave on Sunday. Note on leaving: Because of the rough morning conditions, decided to tow Proposal back home. We did this on Wednesday but Zanhizer's only charged us for one night! Thanks again Z. Mark

My 2 cents

This is just my option and alot of people may not feel this way but here goes. I think instead of having a big get together with classes and speakers durning the summer do it in the spring. All of the ones here in Seattle have been at least 6 hrs away. You have to take time off to get there on a Friday. Put a race in there along with classes and you have a pretty full Sat. I would reather spend the time talking with people and looking at what they have done to their boats. Also no one gets burned out trying to set everything up, the cost is pretty cheap and everyone has a good time.
