Seadaddler I respect that notion

But when I came to defend a friend, I was deleted. However, demon in our midst is allowed to spout off with contempt for what I consider to be a fine gentleman and experienced sailor. Ross you are welcome aboard my ship any time. sardo

Sometimes paranoia is justified, but not in this case.

There is enough information disclosed in a few dozen exchanges that I can get within a few miles of anyone here without much effort and any hacker worthy of the name can get all of our data. Consider how much junk e mail we get each week. How did they get our addy? How many unsolicited phone calls we get. How did they get our phone number? or all of the junk mail that comes in the USPS. All of our drivers licenses , voter registration data, business licenses are public information. Fred F,x,n,y, etc. is Stillraining, he confessed last night, he has an excavating business in the Washington coastal area and he has an unpaid yard bill for winter work on his boat. Some things are hardly worthy of response and this silliness is very high on that list and his baiting is really becoming tiresome.

Bill..

If you are concerned about identity issues you may want to consider using Bill R. as a profile as opposed to your full name. Adding your boat model and brand (we are not asking for the name of the vessel which could be looked up on the USCG web site), and your GENERAL sailing waters, such as South Florida, Chesapeake Bay or Maine gives identity thieves NOTHING!! What it does do is give us a way to answer a question like the one bellow that we see here all too often. "Hi guys I'm thinking about buying a Delta Fast Set 35 do you think it will work for me??" If one could click on a profile and see that the poster owns an Islander 32 (again no boat names are necessary) and sails in Chesapeake Bay (exact location not necessary) better advice and answers could be given..

Well Ross, I guess I understand it a little differently

My Army job is Information Operations. We use information to goat f*&k the "bad guys." You know, rumors, lies, using his slip ups on the Internet and "other" places to either target him or get him to waist his time. Let me put it this way, If I had to conduct an operation on just about any American I'd be able to make his/her life a living hell. The saving grace is that most of us are not worth the effort. Not worth the effort until you disclose some critical piece of information. Credit card info and date of birth are two really bad things to put out on the web. so everybody has some critical information that can make them a target that is worth going after but only the individual knows what that data is. An example: Lets say I'm an undercover SWAT guy and have to live on a boat to promote my cover story. If I go and post my "data" on this site it could actually improve my cover. If on the other hand I live on a boat and have to conduct an undercover operation that requires that I not be associated with boats then all my past posts would be a liability. Now nobody is going to use their real name when doing an undercover operation but perhaps that is why I would not want to post my name, home port or boat name. you get the idea.

Just figured it out.

How stupid of me. How elementary! Bill Roosa=Fred F. Yep, one and the same guy. Don't ask me how I figured it out. But I just did. Excellent spoof Bill! Sardo

Bill the key here is that your target must be worth the

effort. Just harassment for its own sake is a profound waste of time. As I have stated any hacker worthy of the name can work back through all of the levels and layers here and find the computer that "Fred" is working from.

I'd have to disagree with you on that one Ross

I'm pretty sure that can't be done on this system. Course I'm running linux. But you are right and that is why there is not much concern about everybody knowing my name and such. I'm not worth it. I intend to keep it that way.

A taste of what can be done

Consider for a moment that Bill Roosa, Fred F, and Sardo are all the same person on three different computers sitting side by side and having a 4+ way conversation here. You might want to go back and look at the thread!!!! It is amazing what you can do. And don't listen to my alter egos, they will complain that they are not me but they really are.

Bill?

Try what? If you mean trying to find out information about you that's not what I do but I'll try if you want. Some folks do though and I know of one individual on another forum who claimed he had his house robbed because he told the world they were off gallivanting until XX date and used his name and home city in his profile. OK I'm no pro but in about 30 seconds I just found an address for you in 21001, your wifes work phone number and an email address? I don't know if any of these are still good but then again I don't do this stuff as a criminal so I'm sure someone good could find more. My company has a "low google profile" mandate, for corporate liability reasons, and we all had to take mandatory training on keeping a low google profile.

Low Profile Google???

Interesting. So how do you surf, post, and maintain a low profile? Move every six months, spell your name differently all the time, say you live in different places? And then what do you do about doubleclick, fastclick, and etc.? Seems like those tracking cookies are everywhere!

You got my ex-wife

her OPSEC stinks. All I'm saying is that everybody has critical information. It is mostly the same but there are variations among folks. The idea of mandatory information leaves me wondering why they need it. Some things are required for the operation of the site and I understand that but making my bio mandatory is probably going to send me to another site where I don't have to compromise my info.

Low google...

Low google profile means they do not want us registering and using web sites, with our real names, that could potentially make the company look bad. Sites like My Space etc. etc.. This site would be fine but after the training I decided to not use my real name anywhere on the net unless buying something on a secure server. The guy that did our training was an ex-computer hacker who did jail time and he now trains corporate employees about the pit falls of the internet and keeping a low profile where it matters. According to this guy genealogy sites are a big one for identity thieves among others... There are many on here who know me personally but I still prefer a screen name.. I can't even log onto this site from my corporate computer and thousands of others to boot so I use my personal laptop, on the boat, and my PDA phone during the day.. P.S. Bill that was a speedy profile change. In a matter of five minutes your boat name and your ex-wifes name dissapeared. C'mon buddy your boat, a Hunter 356 (if I remembered correctly), is not going to link anything to you if you leave the name out...
