Hi, Some facts: 1. Engine running fine for years after replacing mixing elbow Then recently: a. Removed water heater and plugged both connection at the engine b. Checked raw water impeller and it's OK c. Drained and replaced coolant d. Plenty of water coming our of the exhaust Engine overheats after running for about 1 hour What is it: thermostat, dirty heat exchanger? I'll appreciate some help Regards Ed

try this...
instead of plugging the hoses to the water heater, connect them in a loop. You may have to bleed the cooling system if the fill cap isn't high enough above the height of the engine. Also feel the hoses as the engine is running to make sure you can feel cool water running through them.

Puzzled
Thank you indeed for the prompt reponse, but I am puzzled. If I connect them, the antifreeze coolant will bypass the heat exchanger altogether, is this correct? Do you kmean the fill cap that connects the heat exchanger cap to the overflow plastic tank? The plastic hangs on the wall above the heat excahnger. There is plenty of fresh water coming out of the exahust so I must have plenty of raw water flow. Is this a correct assumption? Thank you again and regards Ed

You need to loop the old conections to the hot water tank back to the engine. It's like bypassing the heater core on a car. This I beleive will fix the problem.

Engine Temperature
Maybe the thermostat, temperature sensor, or both are shot. These are not expensive and can be changed out w/o the big bill from the marina or yard. I'd order them from Yanmar and give it a shot.
