We're planning to leave Kingston, NY and head down the Hudson. We're contemplating a one night stop-over around Haverstraw and then down at least to the Statue of Liberty. Anybody know of any reasonably priced transient slips on the Hudson in Manhattan? It would be nice to tie up and head into city for a few hours and maybe spend the night before heading back up the river. Any suggestions on the trip or where to tie up would be greatly appreciated.

Old, a bit rickety, but relatively inexpensive and the location is PERFECT !
They don't take reservations, and aside from tying up outside on the wave screen, only 2 slips have enough water for a 5' draft sailboat, but for just an overnight stay it will work.
Make sure you have a couple of large round fenders; you'll need them.:dance:

I will second the 79th street basin. Ive been there on the land side many times as I lived in NYC but have yet the get my boat there.

...perhpas it's "quaint," but how can you recommend a place that has only two suitable berths and doesn't take reservations? What is he supposed to do if they are full?
If you don't have a cruising guide (which you should!), just go to google and search "new york city marina." There are several good looking places on the New Jersey side of the Hudson which will be less than $100/night with services. If you really need to be on Manhattan your options are more limited, but there's the North Cove Marina, which accepts reservations: $5/foot.

Buck and Rob are right. And Buck got a great slip when he was here (I stopped by to say hi).
I pass by the Boat Basin all the time (on the way to my boat, actually). There are a lot of unused moorings. Honestly....he shouldl have no trouble getting one.
On the off chance he doesn't find a slip, kd3pc is right. I would only add one more -- the Shipyard Marina in Hoboken. They always have slips available (because the docks rock so much) There's a ferry to NYC that takes all of 8 minutes from there. Less from Lincoln Harbor.

... We're sailing up to Newport next week, than probably back down LI Sound... maybe we can gt together I'll be sailing in on a 25' MacGregor, so depth at the slips isn't very important. However, getting a slip is important. We're not planning on bringing a dinghy with us, so mooring could be kind of tough. We'd also like to have power available when we tie up for the night.

We just stayed at Haverstraw it's really nice, I thought it was reasonable. I think we paid $4.00 @ ft. I'll have to ask the wife. The facilities are ok. The restaurant is good. They have a pool, fuel, store all at the marina. The sailing is nice too!
We're at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersy City, There are plenty of available slips! I'm not sure of the fee, my guess is $3 - $4 @ ft. There's an expensive restaurant at the Marina, a ferry to NYC $5.00 each way, and a short walk to tons of eateries and mass transit.

I thought guest slips in the San Francisco Bay area were expensive at $1.00 per foot per night, but compared to some of the prices I'm seeing here, I guess it's a great deal. World class sailing, restaurants, plays, a Giants game and events for only $35 a night for a guest slip. Angel Island has mooring balls for $20 per night, max 2 boats on a ball. There are a few nice free anchorages, just a dinghy ride from everything. Let me put this into perspective, I pay $6.15 per foot per MONTH for my slip, including water and power, equaling about $210 a month. At $5.00 per foot, that would be $175 for the night, wow. I have a new found respect for my sailing brothers and sisters back east. The financial commitment you make to sailing is impressive.
