I would not expect my auto(tiller) to work in those wind conditions or chop. Have you gone through all the tuning parameters? I don't know anything about Raymarine autohelms, but the autotiller has a sensitivity setting. Of course, when you get it set just right, the conditions will change.

A lot of it depends on sail trim ...
you will have to detune sometimes to get it to work right ... and you have to self steer the course a couple of minutes for the computer to get the "feel." At least that's the way the 3000 likes it. Yesterday I was out on the gulf in similar conditions and by detuning of sails was able to lock the wheel down and sail close reach plus or minus a half dozen degrees for the better part of an hour with some waves hitting spray over the bow. When we tuned up it was hard work steering. So instead of 6kt working hard we were doing 5.5kt locked down drinking a beer and spacing out. And the track on the GPS looked basically about the same. I have in the past kicked in the 3000 at that point and it doesn't seem to do badly. If you can lock the wheel and balance the rig to the course (more or less)... then the autohelm should also be able to easily control the course. Don't expect the pilot to hold a real tight course in those conditions. Vic Seven 272 #622
