Over heating

A lot of good suggestions. My first guess is that the coolant is just overflowing into the bilge. A quart of coolant isn't a very big puddle.

The overboard discharge water being cool rules out a lot of common culprits. Bad thermostat seems most likely followed by partially blocked (or scaled) heat exchanger.

If you pull back to idle when it starts to overheat, does it cool down?

If so, check:

  • Overpropped: (e.g. can't reach full RPMs). Even bad prop fouling can overheat an engine. But I would think this would warm up the overboard discharge mor

  • Heat exchanger needs to be cleaned (descaled) or unplugged

  • Thermostat (I've had more than one "new" thermostat that didn't open fully. Engine could run fine at low RPMs as some coolant goes through)

Do you know if the PO ever ran the engine for two hours after installation? If not, could be a a bad installation.

Current status is H/X looked good. Two impeller blades, but no obvious clogs. Currently out for pressure test, acid bath. Hot water heaterA/F circuit plugged solid with white crumbly crystalline stuff. Water circuit also bad. New Isotherm unit on the way. Tried drilling hole for overflow tube. Messed it up. Coolant tank out for replacement of neck insert.

Don't know, doubt it. PO deceased, cant ask. Just finished reading the"Galley Ladys Trial with rebuilding an engine, bedding the rings etc.

Shows whaT I know. H/X had 5 leaks. Mech said might be that on cool down, salt water infiltrated coolant caused destruction of aluminum water heater tank. New H/X on sale for $701. Reg price 780 f'ingg dollars.

Bill 1565, I just bought a Seakamp HX from an on line source for about 350 bucks with the nickel plating option. This was for an M25 Universal motor. Check around before you get taken to the cleaners.

Thanks. Looking into it.

I think I used www.mrcool.com as a source. Seakamp only sells through distributors so it is just a question of who offers best price and delivery. Haven't installed it yet but quality looks great.
