I own a 22 foot Oday fixed keel sailboat(600lbs ballast) displacement 1800lbs, that I regularly sail on San Francisco Bay. Winds usually blow 10 to 20 around here, but I always get caught with stronger winds when I go torwards the Golden Gate. I'm interested in knowing if anybody with a 22 footer have been caught in 25 to 30 knots and how did your boat fair.

It is impossible to go 22 knots on a 22 foot boat under sail alone. There is a math formula to determine max speed and I would guess it is around 5 knots.

Actually, Impossible, it's not impossible but improbable. I regularly sail faster than the actual windspeed on my windsurfer if I can gain planing speed in lighter winds. The formula that you speak of is dependant on a number of factors. Actually your boat (original poster) will probably reach 10-12 knots in that much blow, I know my O'day has 2 reefing stops on the mainsail and on the second reef I can easily sail in 25 knots... it's a little exciting but easily doable if you are experienced.

Yes, with good skills and reefed main you would have a ball in 20 kt winds. It is tiring and you'll be mentally and physically exhausted after sailing all day long, but totally rewarding. As with all bridges, the wind is funneled through the small opening between land and that is where you have to watch out. Ease the main and use small headsail. The worst that will happen is that the boat will round up into the wind.
