MoonSailer,

OK, guess you don't have that big OB to go zooming over the current any more. Now you've got to fight it like the rest of us :) My brother has a Mac 26. Keeps it on one of the lakes in Texas.. He complains of blister problems (the dealer finally fixed them) and now engine problems. I've told him "what do you expect, it's a Break Out Another Thousand".

On the gulf coast they have one high tide and one

low tide in 24 hours but on the atlantic coast there is one flood and one ebb every 6 hours. So riding an ebb going out and the flood coming in would make for short days. You could go out at slack water and come back in at slack or flood 12 hours later. But you have to be careful about some water when the tide turns , it can get quite turbulent.

Max flood

Ross he should only have to worry about it at max flood. Using the rule of thirds he can stretch his window a bit and still be OK. Used to do it all the time on the NJ coast. Mike

Why the Ditch??

So many people going north and south take the ditch. Why??? Is it primarily the time of year??? I lived and sailed at Myrtle beach for a couple of years. In the summer therewas often not much wind at all. Spring and fall could be interesting!!! But in most accounts of the snowbird voyages they do the ditch from Chesapeake to Jacksonville and beyond. Not many chances to sail in the ditch.

Why ? ?

Well, think about it... In the Fall and Spring, staying inside is easier, smoother, and more practical. Most snowbirds are retired. They're not generally in a rush; they don't want to be roughed up; and they won't run at night. It's much easier to do 30-40 miles a day; stay anchored or tied up when the weather is bad, and "take it easy". Getting in and out of inlets for day runs offshore is often more time consuming than it's worth and few want to be "out there" at night. So... they stay in.
