Trailered my Mac 26 to Charleston
Back about 10 years ago my wife and I trailerd our Mac26 down to Charleston and sailed around the bay for a long weekend. Even spent one night at anchor behind a sand bar/mud bank in the harbor. We had a nice time but had a little trouble with the tide. The tide came in while we were exploring fort Sumter and I had to swim out to the boat. There was a lot of current(for swimming) but I was able to float/swim to the boat. We didn't feel brave enough to take the Mac out of the harbor. We are back on a lake (bummer) right now but spent a couple of years on the gulf coast where tides are not much of a factor. There are currents but again they seem not that strong around Panama City /Pensacola. Part of me wants to forget that part of the east coast and just go straight to Ross' bay. But places like Cumberland Island and Savannah are interesting historic places that might be fun to visit. I spent a weekend at Tybee Island and enjoyed it immensely. you CAN do offshore hops up and down the East coast from Fla to N.C. ... even in a Mac... but... you will have to wait for weather windows; and when you have a nice window you're far better to just do an overnight offshore (~36hrs) because .. it takes an hour or two (even with favorable currents) to get into or out of the inlets, so you spend many of your daylight hours just getting in and out, on a typical sail boat... But, then, you really don't need to worry about the currents; just crank up that big OB and plane right over them ! ! For the rest of us, as Ross says, currents are a big issue, so you would have to time them. Only occasionally is it practical to go out with a favorable current and also come in with another favorable current (if you are trying to do the leg all in the same day). So, plan to motor the waterway, and when the weather is good, plan an overnighter to enjoy the ride and cover alot of "ground". AND, get a good GPS/chartplotter, it's a must ! We Now Own a Pearson 323
Hi Buck I guess that I omitted the part that we sold the Mac 26 several years ago and now own a Pearson 323. I never took my 1988 Mac 26 out into the open ocean. It was a great Lake boat but I never considered it for open ocean use. Even in Mobile bay we were out in conditions that would have been very difficult at best in the Mac 26.

I have done this many times over the years and would not recommend it for a Mac 26. However the Pearson will make it fine and you should be able to do overnight sails and they are beautiful. I don't know about murrels inlet but it has been a local knowledge inlet as long as I remember. However Ocracoke is local knowledge and has been fine for many sails offshore for me. Beaufort NC is a great inlet, Wilmington is great, Georgetown SC is great. Charleston is great, Savanna is great, Jacksonville is great and Miami is great. Several other inlets in Florida are fine. You should never attempt to enter any of these at night but leaving is fine. Good luck and watch the weather as many boats are lost when conditions change for the worst. If you get caught out stay offshore until conditions improve.
