Hi

Really in a bind. Need HELP! Need to replace the stuffing box hose. The bell to the propeller shaft will not budge. I have tried every thing and various sprays including freeze out. Tried two different gear pullers. Cannot get this bell to loosen in order to remove and replace the hose that tore. Anyone have any ideas? The season is approaching and I'm doing my best to get her ready. Please help. Any suggestions is appreciated.

Should I just cut it off and try to find a replacement? Been at the for two weeks now

I have an 84 H34 and the bad news is that I just had to have the shaft cut off and a new one put in with a new coupler. The good news is, is that I now have a a new shaft and a new coupler!

Heat

Try heating it and prepare for the worst and also go on Main sail's web site and he will show info on taking it apart or replacing it.

If it is on that hard you'll likely need to cut the shaft and replace both. Please do not use the gear box flange to "press" it off if it is that tight. You can VERY EASILY warp it more than what you need to align to which is about .003"..

Cutting the coupling off makes a HUGE mess of steel dust that will leave rust on anything and everything it lands on once humidity hits it..... In my experience the cost of a new shaft is cheap compared to the mess left behind by cutting a coupling off...

On a boat of your vintage a new shaft may not be a bad idea especially if your old one is bronze.....

Also please use a "stuffing box hose". They are made by Buck Algonquin and are far more robust than wet exhaust type hose.

On top is the right stuff..

Is there really no way to pull the shaft and take it to a machine shop to have the coupler pressed off and an new one installed?

If you can pull the prop you can hoist the motor enough to get the shaft with the coupling flange out ( pull it forward and out). Put it back the same way. Just remove only the top nuts on the mounts and the re-alignment is fairly minor.

I used my mainsheet tackle and a 4X4 across the companionway.

Hi everyone

We were able to cut off the coupling. Ordering a new one. My friends insists that I should not bother with fit and facing to the shaft. He also insists that I should not worry about having the shaft worked on at a shop. I want your opinion on this. The engine was moved to accomplish all this.

Another question regarding the stuffing box: what was removed appears to be from a special kit of some sort. I expected to find flax rings that could come apart. I found ivory colored rings separated by metal washers, still in good shape.. Does this make sense to anyone? I am new to sailing, easy to guess, and want to make sure I am doing the right. Should I just replace everything with flax? reuse the washers in between? THANK YOU SO MUCH
