I have a 1984 C22 - first boat. I can't figure out where the outhaul attaches to. It's a short line from the end of the mainsail. At the end of the boom is a small eyelet. Does the outhaul attach to this with a simple bowline knot? Thanks to Dave who responded to an earlier posting of mine (I couldn't find it when I went back to it). I don't have a block or cleat near the end of the boom. My boat's already in the water and I need to rig her. I'd like to do it ASAP, but I can't find any resources that explain how the outhaul works on this model.

Hi John, I have a catalina 22#81. My Outhaul is attached at the eyelet and the line runs through the eye in the sail. I secure with a small truckers hitch. When I remove my main sail the Outhaul line stays with the boom. Good winds Al

Rigging and use of outhaul.

John, The outhaul simply pulls the bottom of the mainsail rearward on the boom. Many sail with it in that position all season long. A small eyebolt, or strap, can be added (if not already there)at the rear of the boom to anchor this line. Now, if you really want to move up into higher performance you rig up a block assembly and cleat that allows the outhaul to be tightened of slackened. This greatly effects performance of the mainsail and thus boat speed. It was one of the best tricks I added to my 22. 3 to 4" of travel is all required to make a new beast out of my boat. A company called "Catalina Direct" sells a very helpfull manual for Catalina 22's that shows this item and many other ideas for about $10. It is a must for beginners or others with this boat. You can build your own outhaul from their drawing or buy theirs. Enjoy, Ray
