Newbie question... How to properly attach outhaul rigging to the mainsail/boom on early 70's (not sure if it is 71 or 72) Macgregor 22. Just in case alterations have been made from the default, here is the description: On starboard side of the boom there is a small block toward aft and jam cleat about 4 feet in front of it; on port side of the boom there is another small block even further to the aft and about 4 feet in front of it an eye... I also have a 1971, 22' Venture. I have attached a line to the outer end of the sail, ran it through the cheek block at the outer end of the boom and then thru the jam cleat. Now when I wish to tighten the outhaul I sail directly into the wind and pull it tight. For light air I release the line to increase th fullness of the sail. It works well, even when singlehanding. I also have three slab reef points on the sail and use them regularly And I have installed a downhaul on the jib/genoa. Now I have a well behaved sailboat for all conditions, without having to go forward to lower the jib/genoa. Novelman

Hmm, I wish my V-21 had rigging. I have a little loop on the end of the boom that I tie both the topping lift and the outhaul to. Seems to work though.

From your description of existing hardware
Depending upon the relationship of the tack of the sail to the existing blocks, I would try: Figure eight at the end of the rope at the forwardmost port eye, round the port block, through the tack cringle, round the starboard block, and forward to the cleat. You have one more block than my system.
