Outhaul question?

I need to replace the outhaul on my 86 C36 and I'm wondering if it is a rope to wire splice or an eye to eye splice inside my boom. I beleive it is the original outhaul from the factory. If it is a rope to wire splice I should be able to use the old outhaul as a snake to pull the new one through. If it's eye to eye I'll have to remove one of the fittings on the end of the boom. I dread this because I'm sure the galvanic corrosion has seized all four of the screws holding the end fitting on. Any input would be great. Thanks, Rodd C.

Sorry

On mune (1984 C-36) the wire was attached to an eye with a nicopress crimp fitting. The rope was tied to a shackle, which was attached to the eye.

You have to pull the fitting

On my 1990, the control line leads through a block system that is inside the boom. one of the blocks in the system is shackled to the cast fitting in the forward end of the boom so you'll need to get that fitting out if you want access the block and tackle. You might be able to reach the moving block that the wire outhaul is shackled to from that end, but you won't be able to work with it much: the wire is a couple of feet shorter than the boom...I ended up pulling the fittings on both ends when I rebuilt mine. You might also want to check the C36 mailing list archives on SailNet: there was a pretty good discussion (including part numbers) for rebuilding the outhaul assembly on there a few months back.

It's a good idea to take end caps off

I just rebuilt my outhaul on my 1986 C36 and exchanged the blocks with those with bearings. I also went to a 6:1 purchase instead of the stock 3:1. I taped the end cap holes and put 1/4" bolts in place of the old corroded screws. MUCH better! Good luck, Trevor S/V Dunoon
