Outhaul Line - H31

There is a 3/8" line is two part and goes around a sheave which is in turn held by a wire rope that attaches to the main outhaul at the end of the boom. The rope must be the original line as it is getting pretty rotten. One end of the rope comes out of the mast end of the boom for tightening. I want to replace it, but do not know how to get to the dead end inside of the boom. Has anyone done this?Thanks

Never removed mine either.

Scott:I have never removed mine either. I would try sewing a piece of line onto the end at the mast end. Then pull it through the boom. Then you can take it to a rigging shop and have them make you up a new one. When you get the new line just reverse the process.Let me know how this works so I can do mine <g>.

Just did it,

If the system you have is like th H34, you need to remove the boom, remove the gooseneck end of the boom, inside you will find a block and tackle, the first thru-bolt will need to be removed too, all will come out so as to replace the rotten lines. Be careful removing the screws, mine were solid and broke off when I tried to remove them, took the boom ends to a machine shop, he heated and removed the broken pieces without damage. Good Luck!

I just did my 1984 H31. As John said, " remove the boom, then you have to drill out the rivets on the gooseneck end, and remove . You will find one end of the out haul attached there. Splice the new line to the old and pull it threw. I removed both ends of the boom fittings for examination. I found a couple of birds nests. No wonder things hung up. I had a 7/16" line for an outhaul, which was to thick and it worked hard. I replaced it with 3/8 th line and it works much better.

Thanks... I suspected as much. Looks like I have to drill out the rivets at the mast end. Oh well, most things on the 31 work pretty well!!
